Two Big Frauds: I Pretended to Be Pregnant at a Crisis Pregnancy Center

Two Big Frauds: I Pretended to Be Pregnant at a Crisis Pregnancy Center | Herstory | Scoop.it
In reality, however, they’re often the opposite: disseminating misinformation and, in the process, robbing women of their autonomy. And the best worst part of the situation is the fact that plenty of crisis pregnancy centers, in spite of their duplicity, are actually licensed community clinics, which gives them an added air of respectability.

So, in the interest of trying to understand what actually goes on in these inexplicably legal establishments, I decided to go undercover as a preggers patsy.

Freedom Whore – Abortion, Shame, and The Right To Deny Me My Rights by Martha Plimpton

Freedom Whore – Abortion, Shame, and The Right To Deny Me My Rights by Martha Plimpton | Herstory | Scoop.it

Many people might end up taking issue with my point of view here or how I’m expressing it. That will happen. I can’t, nor am I intending to, speak for every single person affected by the majestic tentacles of misogyny and patriarchy that reach out in all directions and attempt to suffocate the life out of any sense of shared outrage or mutual support of each other’s struggle with either. Plus, I admit, my thinking is not particularly nuanced on a day like today. Like a lot of people, I’m mostly just pissed.

Illegal Abortions Lead to Women’s Health Crisis in Haiti

Illegal Abortions Lead to Women’s Health Crisis in Haiti | Herstory | Scoop.it

After three days of vomiting, heavy bleeding and agonizing pain, she stumbled into a maternity hospital. Doctors rushed her into surgery where they stopped the bleeding, and repaired her perforated uterus, botched in the first abortion attempt...

Abortion is illegal in Haiti but women and girls are losing their uteruses and their lives as they turn to clandestine, increasingly deadly ways to terminate their pregnancies. These unsafe abortions are leading to a public health crisis in a region with one of the world’s highest rates of unintended pregnancies, experts say.

Actor Mark Ruffalo Shares Personal Story For Mississippi Abortion Rights Rally

Actor Mark Ruffalo Shares Personal Story For Mississippi Abortion Rights Rally | Herstory | Scoop.it

I actually trust the women I know. I trust them with their choices, I trust them with their bodies and I trust them with their children. I trust that they are decent enough and wise enough and worthy enough to carry the right of Abortion and not be forced to criminally exercise that Right at the risk of death or jail time.

There was no mistake us making Abortion legal and available on demand. That was what we call progress. Just like it was no mistake that we abolished institutional racism in this country around the same time. The easy thing to do is lay low, but then are we who we say we are? Do we actually stand for anything, if what we do stand for is under attack and we say nothing? There is nothing to be ashamed of here except to allow a radical and recessive group of people to bully and intimidate our mothers and sisters and daughters for exercising their right of choice. Or use terrorism and fanaticism to block their legal rights or take the lives of their caregivers. Or design legislation that would chip away at those rights disguised as reinforcing a woman’s health.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

More men and women need to take a stand like this.

Pre-med Univ. of South Florida student charged with first degree murder for tricking girlfriend into taking abortion pill

Pre-med Univ. of South Florida student charged with first degree murder for tricking girlfriend into taking abortion pill | Herstory | Scoop.it

Via Genevieve Valle, BloodandButter
Genevieve Valle's curator insight, May 16, 2013 3:56 PM

Another horrendous crime out of Florida... This pre-med student, John Welden, sent his pregnant girlfriend to see his OB/GYN father. Welden told his girlfriend that his father diagnosed her with an infection requiring her to take antibiotics. Welden swapped the anibiotic pill for Cytotec, the abortion pill. He instructed his girlfriend to take the "antibiotics" three times a day for a week. His girlfriend only learned about the abortion pills when she showed up to the emergency room a week later, having aborted the pregnancy. Welden's girlfriend was six weeks pregnant and communicated her intent to carry the pregnancy to term to all of her friends and family. Federal authorities have since charged 28-year-old Welden with first degree murder and tampering. Normally, a 6 week old fetus would not be considered viable, but federal law provides otherwise. Under the Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 (18 USC 1841), an "unborn child" is defined as “member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb.” The Act further provides that if an unborn child is killed during the commission of a federal crime, it will constitute murder. Here, Welden's tampering with his girlfriend's prescription (a federal crime) allows authorities to tack on a first degree murder charge. Welden faces life in prison for his crimes. It is not clear what role, if any, his OB/GYN father played in the commission of these crimes.

What about Rob Portman’s daughter? Why Republicans' new empathy on gays and immigration won't extend to reproductive rights

What about Rob Portman’s daughter? Why Republicans' new empathy on gays and immigration won't extend to reproductive rights | Herstory | Scoop.it

Abortion and access to contraception often get lumped with marriage equality as “social issues,” but there are reasons why they’ve played out differently. Take Portman’s own reasoning in his Op-Ed this morning: “We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives. We also consider the family unit to be the fundamental building block of society. We should encourage people to make long-term commitments to each other and build families, so as to foster strong, stable communities and promote personal responsibility.” In other words, gay and lesbian people are joining what Portman considers to be, and has historically been, a conservative institution — much like the military, where they’d already been serving in secret.

Although family planning used to be considered a conservative issue, there is still something more radical and terrifying about a woman not wanting to be a mother, or wanting to be a mother on her own terms. There will always be people who consider it the same as murder of a fully developed person in the world. There is still far more empathy for an embryo or fetus than for the living woman.
