FROM TEEN SKIN TO BIBA GIRL

FROM TEEN SKIN TO BIBA GIRL | Herstory | Scoop.it

I mostly went to local youth clubs at that time and can’t remember much about the music. We watched films there like Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns and hung out with the skinhead top girls from my school and boys I knew from my primary school, they were skins too; Mark Smith’s gang who lived on my council estate in Pinner Green.

When I was a bit older started going to discos from 16 where they played skins music; reggae like Desmond Dekker, Tighten Up vols. and I used to go to Bourne school disco in South Ruislip because the bands from America would play live reggae, Derrick Morgan and so on I can’t remember names.

The Knack (And How To Get It) In Romance & Fashion - Here's Looking Like You, Kid

The Knack (And How To Get It) In Romance & Fashion - Here's Looking Like You, Kid | Herstory | Scoop.it

The Knack… and How to Get It was a British film released in 1965 about the sexual revolution in swinging London-town, complete with a Greek chorus of disapproving members of society’s “older generation”. In the film, bookish teacher Colin (played by Michael Crawford) is frustrated by the womanizing ways of his housemate, Tolen (played by Ray Brooks).

The film opens with a series of mannequin-esque women in tight sweaters and short skirts, robotically waiting in line to get with Tolen.

Mods: Their Roots, The Revival and How Mainstream Fashion Has Borrowed From it Again

Mods: Their Roots, The Revival and How Mainstream Fashion Has Borrowed From it Again | Herstory | Scoop.it

as thrilled as i've been to see ad campaigns featuring bold, geometric prints and a-line mini dresses, all topped with bouffants and beehives and multiple layers of lashes, i'm also, at times, annoyed at how other fashion writers are presenting these to the masses. titles and captions enticing people to be "go" or "become" mod are making me cringe, for reasons similar to the ones i've listed in a piece i wrote in november entitled no such thing as a punk fad: the effects of mainstream fashion borrowing from subculture style. in it, i briefly mention mod fashion and promise to write about it at a later date and so here we are.

Love the "it's not because you wear a mod-inspired dress that you are a mod" line; hate the lack of capitalization, as it makes for more difficult and annoying reading. Meet in the middle and consider what fashion, movements, and trends are in terms of culture, sales, and consumerism.
