800 Dead Babies Discovered in Septic Tank Of Home for Unwed Mothers

800 Dead Babies Discovered in Septic Tank Of Home for Unwed Mothers | Herstory | Scoop.it
Police are investigating the discovery of 800 long-dead babies found in the septic tank at a home for unwed mothers in western Ireland. The Home (that is its actual name and, yes, it does sound freakishly ominous) housed thousands of pregnant and unwed — "fallen"— women between 1925 and 1961. The women left after they'd paid for their stay in indentured servitude. Their children, reports The Washington Post, may not have been so lucky.

This Intense Short Film About Sexual Abuse Will Destroy Your Silence Forever

In India, a woman is sexually assaulted every three minutes and raped every 20 minutes. However, many Indian women are afraid to speak up, fearing retribution from the very same monsters who abused them, and harsh judgement from an insensitive society.

A recent short film by Pooja Batura that’s making waves around the internet is telling them to do exactly the opposite. The film is simply titled “Bol” and captures the different kinds of sexual abuse an Indian woman suffers from during her lifetime, from child abuse to work place harassment to marital rape.  The message is clear and simple, “The more you talk, the less it will happen.”

Turkish Employers See Losing Women as Erdogan Plans More Births

Turkish Employers See Losing Women as Erdogan Plans More Births | Herstory | Scoop.it

"Handan Yorulmaz has a new rule at her plastics manufacturing company in Ankara: She’ll only hire women if they have children older than 10, or none at all. “I can’t risk losing time and money,” she said from the Turkish capital, where she employs 10 women and six men at Arti Plastik & Ambalaj.

Regulating the mothers on the payroll is her response to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s campaign for women to have at least three children -- preferably five -- and his push for laws to encourage people to marry earlier and procreate more. He’s backing measures to forgive newlyweds’ student loans and offer them low-interest credit, and to allow mothers with three offspring to retire early with tax breaks for their families.

Erdogan frames his crusade for more babies as an economic movement to ensure growth by creating a larger and younger population. Business owners and economists predict it will have the opposite effect by keeping mothers out of the workforce."

Joint Chiefs’ Testimony on Sexual Assault Dismays Senators

Joint Chiefs’ Testimony on Sexual Assault Dismays Senators | Herstory | Scoop.it

by JENNIFER STEINHAUER, New York Times

Senator Roy Blunt sat silently for nearly an hour as his colleagues on the Armed Services Committee questioned one military leader after another on Tuesday about what they were doing to address the problem of sexual assault in the military, and then assessed their responses: “Stunningly bad.”

In particular, Mr. Blunt chided Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert, the chief of naval operations, for displaying scant knowledge of how military allies of the United States had dealt with sexual assault in their ranks, and for thanking Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire, for “the tip” that other countries had grappled with the issue.

“Has anybody who works for you been asking this?” Mr. Blunt, Republican of Missouri, asked with clear exasperation.

In a rare appearance together, a majority of the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — as well as the commandant of the Coast Guard and other military officials — testified before the committee about how the military should approach the problem as Congress prepares to vote on several measures that would significantly change military policy.

“Discipline is the heart of the military culture, and trust is its soul,” said Senator Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan and the chairman of the committee. “The plague of sexual assault erodes both the heart and the soul.”

Senators from both parties pressed the leaders, at times using strong language, about why, decades after the full integration of women into the military, the problem seems to have worsened. Senator John McCain, an
Arizona Republican, recalled meeting with a woman whose daughter was considering entering the military if Mr. McCain, a former naval aviator, could offer his “unqualified support” of the choice. “I could not,” he said. [MORE]

Binders Keepers

Binders Keepers | Herstory | Scoop.it

"Scarborough also mocks “Binder-Gate”, completely missing the point of the reaction to Mitt Romney’s “Binders full of women” statement. Which is exactly what the tap-dancing Romney was trying to do. Romney want’s to hide his record, his stance, his very negative attitude towards women. It’s not the ill-phrased statement made by the perpetually awkward Romney, but the very negative scenario he was attempting to illustrate as a positive.

Let me spell it out for you: We don’t want to hear about binders full of resumes from qualified female candidates — which were given to you, not sought by you, Romney. We want to live in a world where hiring women, at equal pay, is common practice."

N.Y. Sen. Marty Golden cancels feminine etiquette class after outrage

N.Y. Sen. Marty Golden cancels feminine etiquette class after outrage | Herstory | Scoop.it

by (CBS/AP) NEW YORK

A New York state lawmaker has canceled a feminine etiquette class after it incited outcry from his colleagues and constituents.

Republican Sen. Marty Golden's website advertised a July 24 class that would teach women from his Brooklyn district to "sit, stand and walk like a model" and how to "walk up and down a stair elegantly," according to CBS Station WCBS.

Other goals of the "Polished Professional" summer series were to teach women "posture, deportment and the feminine presence," as well as how to "correctly introduce self and others to: religious leaders, politicians, military and other socially prominent officials." [MORE]
