Gender between your ears not your legs. Time to smash taboos like gender specific toys.

Mods: Their Roots, The Revival and How Mainstream Fashion Has Borrowed From it Again

Mods: Their Roots, The Revival and How Mainstream Fashion Has Borrowed From it Again | Herstory | Scoop.it

as thrilled as i've been to see ad campaigns featuring bold, geometric prints and a-line mini dresses, all topped with bouffants and beehives and multiple layers of lashes, i'm also, at times, annoyed at how other fashion writers are presenting these to the masses. titles and captions enticing people to be "go" or "become" mod are making me cringe, for reasons similar to the ones i've listed in a piece i wrote in november entitled no such thing as a punk fad: the effects of mainstream fashion borrowing from subculture style. in it, i briefly mention mod fashion and promise to write about it at a later date and so here we are.

Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, February 23, 2013 4:57 PM

Love the "it's not because you wear a mod-inspired dress that you are a mod" line; hate the lack of capitalization, as it makes for more difficult and annoying reading. Meet in the middle and consider what fashion, movements, and trends are in terms of culture, sales, and consumerism.

A Slip of a Girl: The Exclusive Interview With Curvy Couture's Dora Lau

A Slip of a Girl: The Exclusive Interview With Curvy Couture's Dora Lau | Herstory | Scoop.it

"Bras must give her physical and emotional comfort to fit her life. For as we are seeing in these fittings, full-figured women have special concerns about bras fitting their lives. Just a few weeks ago, in bra fittings in New Orleans for example, we learned more about why full-figured or BBW women search high and low for bras that really fit. A beautician doesn't want to fall out of her bra while working at the sink, washing hair. A woman working on Wall Street told us how she needs a bra to "contain her" to avoid problems with male co-workers.

...This is what I mean about bras fitting lives. The comfort is more than physical, but emotional as well.

But the physical support of a bra cannot be overlooked.

So many women -- women I've met and seen -- have bras which show physical strain and pain! There are red marks beneath the bust from where the bra has been cutting into them. Indentations and red marks from bra straps. Backs and shoulders are hurting; headaches too. This is not necessary!

A properly fitting bra supports a woman, smooths the back so there is no flesh over the bra back or "wings" over straps. There are no marks left. And it will not hurt. Yes, with a larger bosom there are extra challenges to engineer bras to carry so much weight. But at Curvy Couture we love challenges!"

Empreinte Lingerie: Lace Bras That Really Are For Divas

Empreinte Lingerie: Lace Bras That Really Are For Divas | Herstory | Scoop.it

The most significant innovation in lace since John Leaver and Joseph Jacquard developed the two machines which would be called the Leaver's Lace Loom, giving the world Leavers Lace.

Creating molded lace was no small thing to do either.

It took the combined efforts of Empreinte, a German moulding expert, and a Swiss embroiderer 18 months and 40 prototypes to create the technology to design a seamless cup of molded guipure lace.

A Slip of a Girl: For Example... A Rantie, Part One

A Slip of a Girl: For Example... A Rantie, Part One | Herstory | Scoop.it

An update on the opposition to a lingerie shop:

""Obscenity" is, after all, a matter of what a community deems appropriate; and that means only the folks who live in Grand Forks ought to sign the petition. If anyone "ought to." I don't think a lingerie store with vibrators ought to be considered "obscene" no matter where it is located.

Twenty dollars says the folks signing the petition are buying these things themselves anyway. Bigots usually do legislate and police the very things they do but think others should not. As such, they also eschew raising their own children."
