As in feminism, there have been a number of waves in the sex worker movement. This is due in no small part to the turnover in activists themselves, for it is they who help shape conversations as we...

Sociopath Houston attorney crashes plane with two escorts, hires goons to beat one to death, rapes the other, and gets away with it. Betrayal of trust, traumatic brain injuries, fraud, felonies, and violence against women.
Despite a nationwide effort to curb domestic violence, 1,706 women were slain by men in 2012 — and virtually all knew their killer. A new analysis timed for this week’s 20th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act signed into law Sept. 13, 1994, also found that 62 percent of the women killed were “wives, common-law wives, ex-wives, or girlfriends of the offenders.” Many of the women died of gunshots. In fact, the report from the Violence Policy Center and provided to Secrets suggested that women don’t get a gun because women with guns in homes were three times more likely to be murdered than those with no gun in the home. The Center’s report, titled “When Men Murder Women,” looked at 2012 data, the latest available. Alaska, South Carolina and Oklahoma were the top female murder states.
By now you've probably hear about the brutal attack on sex worker Christy Mack alleged to be the work of her ex-boyfriend, Jon Paul Koppenhaver aka War Machine. The model and adult porn star releas...

Evangelical teachings on repentance and forgiveness create a tremendous problem when it comes to rape or other forms of abuse. If you commit a sin and repent of it, God forgives you. I remember hearing Psalm 103:12 quoted constantly: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Of course, this was always said in a positive way—isn’t it awesome that God forgives us no matter what? But it doesn’t must mean God forgives us. It also means God forgives rapists, child molesters, and so on—fully and completely.
Four female high school students share their stories of sexual violence, resistance and healing. This video was produced in the VOICES after-school program a...
“When we rape we feel free”, a young soldier in the Congolese Army confesses with astonishing candour. In a country where it’s estimated that 48 women are raped every hour, his actions have become virtually the norm, and not the exception. The Democratic Republic of Congo has born the brunt of vicious wars and fighting almost continuously since 1996, concentrated in the east of the country. One of the reasons the women repeat to anyone who bothers to ask them is: “where there’s fighting there’s rape”.
Attacks on girls and women as they look for somewhere private to defecate are frighteningly common. Improving basic sanitation, as a global goal would do a lot to make them safer
Women, report rape, get labeled as having a mental illness. This isn't only something that happens in the military, you know; it's just easier to document this group of women and to hold an institu...
The suspect in Friday's killings in Santa Barbara, Calif. wrote a manifesto promising revenge on all the women who had rejected him. But Twitter users responded with their own thoughts on and experiences of misogyny, centered around the hashtag #YesAllWomen
Earliest rule I learned when going out with girlfriends was to never be separated. We would go to the ladies room together and leave the club together. Safety in numbers.
Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention. Examples of this are voyeurism (when someone watches private sexual acts), exhibitionism (when someone exposes him/herself in public), incest (sexual contact between family members), and sexual harassment. It can happen in different situations: in the home by someone you know, on a date, or by a stranger in an isolated place.
Let's face it: When we're newly coupled up, we tend to look at our partner -- and the budding relationship itself -- through a pair of proverbial rose-colored glasses.
Any flaws we detect in our partner are all too easily written off: He shies aw...
Someone sent me an ask about this via tumblr and it turned into a novella so I thought I’d also publish at as a post. The ask was enquiring about how to help victims of domestic violence in two situations; strangers on the street and friends.
"Jemima Robinson has been living in Kenya for a little more than a year, long enough to understand that rape, be it reported or unreported, is a serious problem here.
It’s so serious that she felt compelled to talk about it, not in words but visually, through a three-dimensional installation entitled ‘327 Unreported’ which is currently up at Kuona Trust through December 20th."
Words, and the way we use them to describe rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, and sexual slavery, can evoke sympathy or revulsion toward the perpetrator of a crime or the person who was victimized. Furthermore, both the media and the legal system have tremendous power in eliciting emotions and stirring the pot of public sentiment.
