Photographer Attacked for Her Photographs of Domestic Violence

Photographer Attacked for Her Photographs of Domestic Violence | Herstory | Scoop.it

[Trigger Warning: This post contains a description and photos of physical assault that may potentially be triggering for survivors of such abuse.]

...Since it was published, Lewkowicz’s project has received negative attention because many commenters feel that Lewkowicz should have tried to stop the abuse rather than standing by and documenting the incident on her camera.  Lewkowicz actually did call 911 (and includes images of their response in her photo essay as well), but for many this was not enough.  Even Maggie was attacked by commenters for allowing the abuse to happen, for staying with Shane, and for not fighting back.  As one commenter states, “She is not a victim.  She is the perpetrator.”  But as Jina Moore notes in her article on Salon.com, the only person who isn’t blamed in these comments is the man committing the violence.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Astonishing, but not surprising. *sigh*

People are afraid to have to do something about the issue. It's much easier to attack the messenger.

Penile Code Avenger: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Let's Talk About Domestic Violence

Penile Code Avenger: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Let's Talk About Domestic Violence | Herstory | Scoop.it

For today, we don't even have the right to enjoy our homes, our private spaces, without fearing violence, rape, or worse. And when we dare to point that out, we are not merely dismissed, we are punished.

So many of us are still having to say, "That's life."

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

The history of domestic violence repeating itself.

UN takes new step to include women in international peace talks - AlertNet

UN takes new step to include women in international peace talks - AlertNet | Herstory | Scoop.it

Women often suffer the most in times of conflict, but they are rarely represented in peace negotiations. In fact, no woman has ever been the lead negotiator in U.N.-sponsored peace talks, a situation the United Nations is now seeking to redress through a unique training programme. As delegates began arriving for the recent opening of the 67th United Nations General Assembly, the U.N. Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) for the first time assembled female diplomats from some 20 countries in a two-day training session designed to hone their skills in international conflict resolution.

What We Can Learn From Teen Dating Violence

What We Can Learn From Teen Dating Violence | Herstory | Scoop.it

"the data in this survey reveals that the prevalence of domestic violence, especially when combined with gender-skewed safety education, means that such violence prevails because we are too busy providing reasons such as “it’s a tough economy” that “explain” violence rather than flat out condemn it." Domestic Violence Is Sexy | BlogHer

Domestic Violence Is Sexy | BlogHer | Herstory | Scoop.it
Why do celebrities and victims of domestic violence like Rihanna continue to glamorize abuse?

Why is the media making domestic violence sexy? Because we are letting them.

They’re using the pictures of a leather-clad Rihanna bumping and grinding on stage, not the pictures where her face is torn up and bruised. If we continue to let these celebrities parade their choices in front of us, then we become immune to the truth about domestic violence.

Dennis Waterman caused outrage this week by claiming his ex-wife provoked him into hitting her - because she always won their arguments.

Abuse is abuse!

Good for her for speaking out!

‘If I have to apologise for being a strong, intelligent woman then what does that mean for any woman? It is utterly irresponsible.

It was just a few slaps. That’s OK then?

Heard today, the actor who admitted to slapping his ex-wife. "I couldn't handle the fact she was a strong woman," he said.

The ex-wife said she wasn't a beaten wife, just a few slaps because she was difficult to live with. Hello?

No-one should have the right to hit another person, or animal. That's just wrong.

She's not in a situation where she fears for her life, she got out, or he got out, don't know that detail. Yet, she still somehow feels partly to blame. It takes courage to stand up, go the whole way.
