How the Great Blizzard of 1888 Killed the Petticoat

How the Great Blizzard of 1888 Killed the Petticoat | Herstory | Scoop.it
In 1888, a blizzard hit New York City with such ferocity that it propelled the city into the 20th century. Telegraph and telephone wires whipped dangerously in the wind, prompting the New York Times to call for an underground power line system. Thirty-foot snow drifts stranded passengers between elevated railroad...

Padding Your Bra With Emotions

Padding Your Bra With Emotions | Herstory | Scoop.it

Can't find enough reasons to hate your bra? You will soon: Microsoft is working on a smart bra to measure your mood:

The prototype contains removable sensors that monitor heart and skin activity to provide an indication of mood levels.

The aim was to find out if wearable technology could help prevent stress-related over-eating.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Insulting & sexist

Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, December 21, 2013 1:29 PM

I'm sooooo not into this technology.

Laura Brown's comment, January 4, 2014 8:08 PM
This is right up there with men who think women should be taking pills to "improve" their sex drive. Maybe the bra can come with little coloured flags that pop up in the middle of the cleavage? How has the human race managed to continue to reproduce up until now?
Laura Brown's comment, January 4, 2014 8:09 PM
PS - Yes I always over eat when my boobs are stressed out.

Welcome Back to School, Girls. And Mind Those Breasts! | Herstory | Scoop.it
My daughters' school has a new dress code: No bellies. No buns. No breasts. Funny how it's all about girls, not boys.

Laura Brown's comment, September 17, 2013 9:04 PM
The girls are the ones showing up with most of their skin exposed. Other than showing their boxers, the boys have far less exposure. I'm glad if schools are enforcing dress codes. I get annoyed seeing young women with their ass, boobs and belly exposed. They look like they should be acting on some TV show like Dukes of Hazard, or some other show geared for men who want to see soft porn on TV.

From Bloomers to G-Strings: A History of Burlesque Underwear

From Bloomers to G-Strings: A History of Burlesque Underwear | Herstory | Scoop.it

As a burlesque performer or even an enthusiast you may have seen the old photos of Bettie Page in the “Guide for Strip-Teasers.” It was published in 1953 as a guide to show how much a stripper could reveal depending on what US. State she was in. Burlesque has changed a lot since 1953, most especially the underwear! Let’s take a journey through the ages from the beginnings of burlesque onwards, as a whole, to see how the last few layers of a showgirls costume have changed.

Rachel Mauer's curator insight, October 11, 2013 8:02 AM

A brief history of women's underwear that focuses on Burleque dancers and dancing for male pleasure. This history really focuses on underwear starting in the 1920s but has some key point on what changes from generation to generation. Though this focuses on stage performances, this article has value because what is on stage or in the limelight generally has a hand in the popularity of a piece;.

Artist Rachelle Beaudoin on Kathleen Hanna's "Slut" proclamation and co-opted sexuality | Herstory | Scoop.it

Artist Rachelle Beaudoin examines the female identity in popular culture using commercial icongraphy. Challenging what is presented as mainstream feminine sexuality, Beaudoin's take on figure-shaping and labeling is as jarring as it is thought-provoking.

Lingerie News Round-Up

Lingerie News Round-Up | Herstory | Scoop.it

Julianna Rae has put out an infographic about how many people are sleeping in the nude. If those numbers are true, I guess that means that the the 30 billion dollar lingerie market is due to the sales of playwear and daywear, not sleepwear. (Hmmm, maybe if they brought nylon and more vintage style nightgowns back...)

Deanna Dahlsad's curator insight, March 1, 2013 7:29 AM

Other news includes the closing of 18 Saudi lingerie stores.

A Slip of a Girl: The Exclusive Interview With Curvy Couture's Dora Lau

A Slip of a Girl: The Exclusive Interview With Curvy Couture's Dora Lau | Herstory | Scoop.it

"Bras must give her physical and emotional comfort to fit her life. For as we are seeing in these fittings, full-figured women have special concerns about bras fitting their lives. Just a few weeks ago, in bra fittings in New Orleans for example, we learned more about why full-figured or BBW women search high and low for bras that really fit. A beautician doesn't want to fall out of her bra while working at the sink, washing hair. A woman working on Wall Street told us how she needs a bra to "contain her" to avoid problems with male co-workers.

...This is what I mean about bras fitting lives. The comfort is more than physical, but emotional as well.

But the physical support of a bra cannot be overlooked.

So many women -- women I've met and seen -- have bras which show physical strain and pain! There are red marks beneath the bust from where the bra has been cutting into them. Indentations and red marks from bra straps. Backs and shoulders are hurting; headaches too. This is not necessary!

A properly fitting bra supports a woman, smooths the back so there is no flesh over the bra back or "wings" over straps. There are no marks left. And it will not hurt. Yes, with a larger bosom there are extra challenges to engineer bras to carry so much weight. But at Curvy Couture we love challenges!"
