Harold Nicolson's account from Peacemaking, 1919 (1933): 'Clemenceau at once breaks the silence. 'Messieurs,' he rasps, 'la seance est ouverte.' He adds a few ill-chosen words. 'We are here to sign a Treaty of Peace.''
