Special Economic Zones

Special Economic Zones | Human Interest | Scoop.it

"Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are the most rapidly spreading kind of city, having catapulted exports and growth from Mauritius and the Dominican Republic to Shenzhen and Dubai -- and now across Africa. Today more than 4000 SEZs dot the planet, a major indication of our transition towards the "supply chain world" explored in Connectography.  See more maps from Connectography and order the book here."

INFOGRAPHIC: How food waste has become a huge global problem

INFOGRAPHIC: How food waste has become a huge global problem | Human Interest | Scoop.it

Every year, an estimated 1.2 to 2 billion tons of food is wasted—a massive amount of food that, if saved, would be more enough to feed the world’s hungry. Food waste isn’t just a humanitarian issue however; the problem is also a waste of land, water, energy and money. To put food wastage in perspective, Arbtech created an infographic that points out some of the world’s worst offenders and explains how food loss occurs throughout the supply chain. Click through to learn more about food waste and, most importantly, what you can do to help.

This is an interesting collection that touches on a lot of relevant themes. It should raise a lot of questions for you. The most important thing to keep in mind is what's the state of the world according to these images, and how do the people and places represented compare and contrast?

I don't know HOW to use this yet....but I'm determined to make a lesson out of these pics.

Asia today echoes divided Europe of 1914

Asia today echoes divided Europe of 1914 | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Have we learnt anything from the mistakes of the past? Perhaps not, as modern Asia shows signs of falling into the same traps that triggered World War I.

A short, quite interesting piece on the geopolitical similarities between Europe in 1914 and Asia in 2014. As stand offs over the South China Sea develop and the crises in the Middle East continue to fester, I seriously wonder if we are on the brink of another global conflict. What do other people think?
