Coffee Farmers In East Africa Turn To Specialty Beans | Human Interest | Scoop.it

Farmers across East Africa are rushing to revive their coffee plantations as prices have soared due to a historic drought in Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer.

But farmers are still concerned about the huge swings in coffee prices from year to year. A sudden surge in production could lead to a slump in prices, and that could be disastrous for their finances.

One way to try to mitigate some of the risks is by turning to specialty coffee beans, which can attract a premium of around 40% over ordinary beans, according to Emanuel Mukasa, who runs a one-acre farm located in Mpigi, around 30 kilometers west of the Ugandan capital of Kampala.
