Potato chips, potato curls, home fries, French fries, baked potatoes, scalloped potatoes, sliced potatoes, diced potatoes, mashed potatoes, casseroled, as a salad, in a pie, fully stuffed or oh-so plain, served with love they're all the same...simply delicious! It's quite obvious what the celebration to come is about so no need to delay.

Awakenings: Cheese Sacrifice?

Awakenings: Cheese Sacrifice? | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Whoever is responsible for establishing various days of celebration certainly have a certain wit about 'them'. Today is a prime example. When you think about 'sacrificing' cheese, what comes first to your mind? Buying the best of the best and giving it away as a gift? That would indeed be a sacrifice. Of course, not without trying it first! Then, there are always the scrumptious recipes that call for a generous portion of cheese. Don't you 'sacrifice' the really good cheeses for super delicious dishes? Well, there is an altogether different possibility which is not so appetizing and a bit quirky to say the least.

Awakenings: Pray-leen, Praw-line or Prah-lean

Awakenings: Pray-leen, Praw-line or Prah-lean | Human Interest | Scoop.it
The word for today is "praline". No other spelling other than p-r-a-l-i-n-e. How you pronounce it is an entirely different and somewhat debatable subject matter. Pray-leen, praw-line or prah-lean? In the good ol' USA, the most acceptable pronunciation is "pray-leen". You know...just like something you do in church. Along the East Coast of Georgia, it's pronounced "praw-line" if you please. In Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast, the tendency leans more toward the southern “prah-leen” because of the French cultural influence in the area. The candy's namesake after all is du Plessis-Praslin, a 17th century French nobleman. No matter how you pronounce it, praline candy makes for a mighty fine treat.

Awakenings: If it's covered in chocolate, it has to be good! | Human Interest | Scoop.it

"What is your favorite nut...and I don't mean comedian? There have been many opportunities throughout the year to celebrate different kinds of nuts from the actual nut itself to various nutty recipes to those smothered, covered or dipped in chocolate. The nut for this next celebration had you Feelin' Nutty back in November making the statement "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't" followed by the question "...but when do you NOT feel like a cashew?"

Just saying the word makes you want to pull a handful out of a can or bag and chomp, chomp, chomp away! Then, to completely cover them in chocolate is absolutely sinful! But, let's do it!

There are combination celebrations that just don't seem to go together but then, of course, they really are not designated for that particular purpose in mind. Then, upon occasion, a couple just seem to be meant for each other. Such could possibly be case for the upcoming foodie day for when do kids not like cheese, even when they know it is good for them!

Awakenings: Bleu, bleu...today is bleu!

Awakenings: Bleu, bleu...today is bleu! | Human Interest | Scoop.it
No! 'Bleu' is not misspelled nor is it for this occasion any indication of a sad, gloomy day! The different spelling is attributable to its French connection. The French form of the 'b-l-u-e' spelling has been used in names of various French bleu cheeses - a cheese containing a blue mold - marketed widely in Britain and the United States. Another reference is the name "Le Cordon Bleu" meaning The Blue Ribbon, which designates something or someone (often a chef) of the highest class or first-class distinction.

National Cordon Bleu Day

Via Sharla Shults
Skuuppilehdet's insight:
This celebration surrounds the rich history and heritage of Le Cordon Bleu, the world's largest school for hospitality education which originated in France. From the culinary talents of the school emerged an easy but impressive creation that definitely fits the category of blue ribbon quality with or without the 'bleu' cheese - Chicken Cordon Bleu and Veal Cordon Bleu. Through the years, chicken has remained the most popular but the classic combinations have taken on many creative variations.

Foodie fun for this day targets the sweet tooth and is filled with nutritional goodness! Main ingredient...oatmeal, which is truly beneficial for reducing cholesterol and maintaining healthy hearts. The combination of slow-burning carbs and fiber found in oats is a great fuel source for breakfast. Not into the full meal deal for breakfast...grab a few cookies along with a cold glass of milk! Yum!

Skuuppilehdet's insight:
Oatmeal cookies are so darn delicious two days of celebration have been declared: National Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day (March 18) and National Oatmeal Cookie Day (April 30). March 18 is the day when the old-fashioned, traditional oatmeal cookie gets skinny, thus, the relationship to being lacy is acquired because of the cookie's thinness. Oatmeal Lace Cookies are delicate, chewy, crisp, almost “toffee-ish” in flavor, and addictive. You will fall in love with these cookies.

Awakenings: How the Apple Orchards Spread

Awakenings: How the Apple Orchards Spread | Human Interest | Scoop.it
There are songs about apples (mostly for kids :-)), a company named Apple, poems about apples, stories about apples but the best is the deliciousness of the fruit. Some varieties of red apples include Gala, McIntosh, Red Delicious, Fuji and Honeycrisp. Golden Delicious and Ginger Gold are yellow, Crispin is a green-yellow, and Granny Smith is a green apple. Braeburn, Cortland, Empire, Jonathan and Rome are some of the most-produced U.S. apples. WHEW! That's a lot of apples!

Skuuppilehdet's insight:
The apple, ah-h-h-h! From the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden to Johnny Appleseed and onward through time, the apple identifies with religion, mythology and folktales, along with its absolute deliciousness. It is the legend of Johnny Appleseed that is the focus of this day.

"The Macadamia Nut is one of Australia’s few contributions to the world’s food plants, and this rich, buttery nut is considered by many to be the most delicious of all nuts. The macadamia tree originated in Australia. It was introduced into the United States in Hawaii around 1881 and used ornamentally. The first commercial orchards of macadamias in Hawaii were not planted until 1921.

Today's History Lesson...a culinary turning point

There was a time when cooking shows were in their infancy. Think back to the 60s. In fact, televisions were just beginning to become a household item. Spending time in the kitchen rapidly was becoming spending time in from on the TV. Then comes along one who revolutionized the way Americans cook, especially French cooking.

The myth than garlic deters vampires is commonplace thanks to Hollywood and popular literature, so today "Vampires, beware!" Did you know it is also thought to protect against the evil eye and to ward off jealous nymphs said to terrorize pregnant women and engaged maidens? In addition, despite its pungent odor and taste, garlic enhances the flavor of almost any kind of food anywhere in the world and is well known for its diverse medicinal properties.

At first glance, this next celebration might appear to be one of the few non-sweet days. That is, of course, if you overlook the dark brown sugar, molasses or honey. Then, more likely than not, the next thought will reflect upon Thanksgiving or Christmas. However, there is no written or verbal law, stating that you can only enjoy this specialty's nice and crispy caramelized sugar-coated outside skin in November or December.

Awakenings: Bock Beer & Ravioli | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Personally I never quite cultivated a taste for beer. Thus, there are many, many beers on the market around the world with which I am not familiar at all. For example, Bock Beer. Never heard of it 'til today upon discovering it has its own day! Bock Beer is of German origin first brewed in the town of Einbeck in the 14th century. Not sure who or why this day is celebrated but here it is - a day dedicated to Bock Beer. [Read all the way through...there is more to celebrate on this day!]

Awakenings: All 'Bout The 'Choke

Awakenings: All 'Bout The 'Choke | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Some foods are just good. Others fall within the classification scrumptious. There are even some you might call exciting. But what do you say about the artichoke? It's a vegetable with arching, deeply lobed, silvery, glaucous-green leaves (according to Wikepedia, that is). People who cook with culinary flair (Food Network, for example) say the artichoke 'goes great in just about anything and dazzles on its own as well. Use it in panzanella salad, pasta and more tasty dishes." What do you think?

Skuuppilehdet's insight:
All 'Bout The 'Choke: Did you know the artichoke is a member of the sunflower family? You don't eat seeds, instead it's the bulb that's edible before it blossoms. Artichokes may be boiled, baked, steamed, grilled, deep fried, and stuffed with all sorts of yummy fillings.
