Fascinating vintage pictures have given a glimpse of life in London's East End in the early 20th century. These black and white images taken between the 1920s and 40s show Londoners in Whitechapel, in Tower Hamlets. The district has a rich multicultural history, and is known as the location of the infamous Jack the Ripper murders of the 1880s. During the Victorian era the area became associated with Charles Dickens and his works, which depicted problems of poverty and homelessness.
