This fall, mastery might mean giving a quick quiz, then breaking up the students on the fly into groups based on their answers and sending each group a different exercise from the teacher’s tablet. In not too many years, it might mean using sophisticated pattern-recognizing algorithms to analyze data from homework, games, leisure reading, social media and biometric indicators to determine that one student should be guided to an interactive simulation of coral-reef ecology, another to an essay exercise built around a customized set of coral-reef-related vocabulary words and concepts, and others to something else. ..."

Teachers nationwide are experimenting with new educational technologies. From iPads in schools to e-textbooks, technology is making it possible for teachers to to reinvent their profession. One of the most intriguing ways in which technology is entering the classroom is called “flipping.” The idea is simple: Using technology, teachers make students watch lecture videos and read course materials at home online and then class time is spent working on actual problems with other students and with the teacher, who, instead of lecturing from the front of the room can float between groups and actually spend one-on-one time with pupils.
