Why build a Personal Learning Network?

Why build a Personal Learning Network? | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

The danger busy teachers face is in becoming so engrossed in dealing with the day to day business of teaching that we make poor choices when it comes to time spent on our personal learning. We manage to find time for our students, for phone calls home, for report writing and programming all the while letting our engagement with learning slip down the list of things to do. Ensuring your personal learning is a priority is essential and should be seen against the value it brings to your students; enhance your teaching and you enhance their learning.

Top 10 Educational Technology Hashtags for Educators

Top 10 Educational Technology Hashtags for Educators | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Twitter is a real treasure trove of educational resources for teachers and educators. It is one of my favourite web tools to stay updated about what is going on in the field of educational technology. It goes without saying that everyone of you has got a Twitter account but the question is do you really benefit from Twitter as should be ? By implication, my question is referring to educational and professional development benefits. Yes you might be following hundreds of bloggers and educators ; yet still unable to sift through the tsunami of tweets you have everyday.Tweeting is an art which you should master and the key to the mastery of this art is hashtags.

One reason to have a PLN provided in this article is to get a fresh perspective.  I have been teaching for 8 years and 6 of those years has been the same grade level/content.  This is my reason for a PLN.  I have taught the same thing over and over again and I am always looking for different ways to look at things and new methods to try.  My way may not be the best way.

Educators Moving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset

Educators Moving from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

It is a myth that we operate under a set of oppressive bureaucratic constraints. In reality, teachers have a great deal of autonomy in the work they chose to do in their classrooms. In most cases it is our culture that provides the constraints. For individual teachers, trying out new practices and pedagogy is risky business and both our culture, and our reliance on hierarchy, provide the ideal barriers for change not to occur.

Have to say I agree with a lot of this, especially this part about PLNs "Social learning through PLNs has become a tour de force and it’s not run by any one company. It’s not something to be monetized and refined. It’s rough, all over the place, and always changing. That’s why it’s so great. PLNs, to me, are the future of online professional development."
