Being a Digital Native Isn’t Enough

Being a Digital Native Isn’t Enough | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

It is our role as teachers to help students develop the skills to problem solve independently and collaboratively use 21st-century skills while not relying on technology to do all of the thinking for them. Just because these students are digital natives, does not mean that they do not need guidance to navigate the digital world–both in terms of learning how to discern important and relevant information from a large swath of data, and also to be able to inquire and solve problems that take time, thought, and energy.

Top 10 Educational Technology Hashtags for Educators

Top 10 Educational Technology Hashtags for Educators | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Twitter is a real treasure trove of educational resources for teachers and educators. It is one of my favourite web tools to stay updated about what is going on in the field of educational technology. It goes without saying that everyone of you has got a Twitter account but the question is do you really benefit from Twitter as should be ? By implication, my question is referring to educational and professional development benefits. Yes you might be following hundreds of bloggers and educators ; yet still unable to sift through the tsunami of tweets you have everyday.Tweeting is an art which you should master and the key to the mastery of this art is hashtags.

A Call to Arms for ELT.

A Call to Arms for ELT. | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

How much do you challenge your students? Do you get them to think in class?

Have we, teachers, become too “nice”, too “Well done, M.! Fabulous, J.! Brilliant, K.!” when doing so-called “feedback” on tasks?

I say “feedback” because this isn’t really giving them any information except that their teacher seems to have some form of extreme-adjective-Tourette’s, is it?

So come on guys, let’s throw away the wishy-washy soap, and let’s get down to some hard graft, or better – let’s get our learners down to some hard graft!

36 Tools to Digitise Coursebook Activities | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Nik Peachey says he often heard teachers commenting that they would like to use more technology with their students, but they have to cover the materials in the coursebook. So, he started thinking about ways we could use technology to quickly and simply convert coursebook activities to something more interactive on the web.

The document shows 36 different ways we can use web based tools to enhance the things we do in the classroom and make students homework options more interesting and communicative.

10 Commandments of Twitter for Academics

10 Commandments of Twitter for Academics | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Some ideas by Katrina Gulliver

"1. Put up an avatar. It doesn't really matter what the picture is, but the "egg picture" (the default avatar for new accounts) makes you look like a spammer.

2. Don't pick a Twitter name that is difficult to spell or remember.

3. Tweet regularly.

4. Don't ignore people who tweet at you. Set Twitter to send you an e-mail notification when you get a mention or a private message. If you don't do that, then check your account frequently.

5. Engage in conversation. Don't just drop in to post your own update and disappear. Twitter is not a "broadcast-only" mechanism; it's CB radio.

6. Learn the hashtags for your subject field or topics of interest, and use them.

7. Don't just make statements. Ask questions.

8. Don't just post links to news articles. I don't need you to be my aggregator.

9. Do show your personality. Crack some jokes.

10. Have fun."

Networked Student

The Networked Student was inspired by CCK08, a Connectivism course offered by George Siemens and Stephen Downes during fall 2008. It depicts an actual project completed by Wendy Drexler's high school students. The Networked Student concept map was inspired by Alec Couros' Networked Teacher. I hope that teachers will use it to help their colleagues, parents, and students understand networked learning in the 21st century.

Ten things about computer use in schools that you don't want to hear

Ten things about computer use in schools that you don't want to hear | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

The comments below are adapted from a presentation I put together for senior policymakers in a developing country who have high level oversight of the use of technology in thousands of schools. Complemented by a separate discussion about 'worst practices' in ICT use in education, there were meant to be provocative, and to serve as a springboard for subsequent discussion and debate.

E is for eCoursebook

E is for eCoursebook | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Apple’s plan to launch electronic publishing of school textbooks set social networks a-twitter, triggering flurries of excitement and apprehension in equal measure.  To expedite this initiative, Apple have launched an app, called iBooks Author, which allows wannabe textbook authors to create interactive ebooks and self-publish them (of course, only on an iPad, and with Apple taking a nice little chunk of the profits).

The enthusiasts have been talking up the way this technology will open up textbook writing to anyone with an iPad, while allowing material to be customized for very specific markets. Moreover, by shortcutting the laborious production processes of print publishing, plus the huge costs incurred, e-textbooks will be cheaper, as well as more eco-friendly, and less a burden on kids’ tender spines.

How Interactive Ebooks Engage Readers and Enhance Learning

How Interactive Ebooks Engage Readers and Enhance Learning | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Enhanced ebooks (ePUB3) are a new digital publication standard that allows easy integration of video, audio, and interactivity. I expect this format to advance the future of textbooks and other educational material. Future textbooks might be able to “read themselves” with audio narration, perhaps preventing students from actually reading. But the benefits outweigh the downsides; for example, the new text books might also offer the ability to make and share annotations without destroying the book, interactive self-tests throughout the chapters, and generally a much more enjoyable learning experience.
