Digital citizenship is not so different from traditional citizenship. We still need to guide students to be kind, respectful and responsible. What’s new is teaching them how to apply these values to the realities of the digital age.

In a recent research article published by PEW Internet under the title " The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing and How Writing is Taught in Schools ", 91% of teachers surveyed report that " judging the quality of information " as the top of the digital skills students need for the future. Similarly, another 91 report that "writing effectively" as being essential skill for students while 54 % of teachers think that working with audio, video or graphic content as being important but not essential.

Very interesting and important ideas that students should learn and keep in mind when using the internet. We need to help minimize cyber bullying!!!! We also need to incourage our kids to use the internet for possitive things and not making someone life a living inferno.

At one time in the not so distant past there were no cell phones. And then everything changed at a rate faster than the speed of amending a student handbook. I can distinctly remember the first time one of my 8th grade students brought a cell phone to school. It really wasn’t that big of a deal, more of a novelty really. I mean one student with a cell phone had next to no bearing on our day to day school operations. But then a second student brought a cell phone.

Sometimes communicating via computers can feel anonymous and make people lose touch with the impact of what they say online. This video highlights the problems this causes and explains a basic idea: that our words matter, online and off. It teaches why citizenship matters in the real world, how one person can behave differently online and off, what happens when someone forgets that real people get their comments, why citizenship is important online and off.
