The e-textbook transformation

The e-textbook transformation | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

A new wave of e-textbooks is giving students more than just words and a few hotlinks on a digital page. Publishers over the last few years have been adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes designed to engage students more deeply in their learning.

A transformation which is not a revolution. It will take time and effort.  It's important we give it the space to take its natural course.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, July 25, 2014 2:11 PM

Thank you Nik. I like reading about innovations like e-textbook transformation that make learning more accessible to all students.

Raj Shekhar Mishra's curator insight, March 20, 2015 3:07 AM

To engage students more deeply in their learning publishers are making the textbook a hands-on activity by adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes.  The goal is not simply to replace traditional textbooks with e-books but to fundamentally change teaching and learning .The best learning strategy is the multi-modal approach—you can hear it, you can see it, you can manipulate and interact with the content.

Publishing 3.0 - A new model for independent educational publishing

Publishing 3.0 - A new model for independent educational publishing | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Nik Peachey: Significant changes over the last couple of years though have led me to believe that now is the time to look at a new model of ELT publishing, at least for the realm of teacher development books.

The changes I mention above include

A proliferation of increasingly low cost e-reading devices and tablets. The development of powerful free software and applications such as iBooks Author for the development of media rich ebooks. The combination of these applications with secure and reliable marketing platforms, such as Lulu and iBookStore. The development of crowd-funding platforms such as KickStarter and Indigogo.

ActiveTextbook - Turn PDFs into multimedia documents | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Active Textbook is an interesting service that you can use to turn your PDFs into multimedia documents. The basic idea behind the service is that you can upload PDFs and add pictures, links, and videos that are displayed when students read your PDF through the Active Textbook viewer. While reading your PDF through Active Textbook students can highlight, draw, and add comments to the document.

For many teachers the traditional textbook just doesn't cut it any more. Between the rapid pace at which information changes and rising cost, many are looking for alternatives. Believe it or not, there are lots of options out there, if you know where to look and you are willing to get your hands dirty. The best part? Kids can create these using any of the tools below.

Ten-Year-Old Girl Publishes on Amazon

Ten-Year-Old Girl Publishes on Amazon | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

A mother's story.

It’s a story about joy in learning, love of books, and a little girl’s passionate business idea.

It all started one day when she came home really excited because she’d written a story in school. When she showed me the story, all I could say was ‘this is just the first chapter …”. She looked at me oddly in a goose-pimply way and answered ‘That’s exactly what my teacher said’. Then she said ‘I have something to do’ and ran off into her bedroom, only to reappear a couple of hours later, with a secretive look on her face.

Some interesting nsights into why paper based books are becomming a thing of the past. I particularly like this one:

"READING FOR PLEASURE was largely extinguished by four generations of not-very-good teaching philosophies. By treating a book as homework and a punishment, we’ve raised people to not look forward to reading."

Casey Anley's comment, August 16, 2013 5:25 AM
I agree with Nik Peachey's echo of tthe problem created by treating reading like a punishment - that's how kids see it these days unfortunately. How can we return the fun to reading??

How Interactive Ebooks Engage Readers and Enhance Learning

How Interactive Ebooks Engage Readers and Enhance Learning | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Enhanced ebooks (ePUB3) are a new digital publication standard that allows easy integration of video, audio, and interactivity. I expect this format to advance the future of textbooks and other educational material. Future textbooks might be able to “read themselves” with audio narration, perhaps preventing students from actually reading. But the benefits outweigh the downsides; for example, the new text books might also offer the ability to make and share annotations without destroying the book, interactive self-tests throughout the chapters, and generally a much more enjoyable learning experience.
