Use of phonics can improve learning to read English as a second language, according to a review of 30 years’ research by Dennis Odo, of Pusan National University, South Korea. Odo conducted a comprehensive statistical analysis (a meta-analysis) pooling the overall results of 46 studies from 1990 to 2019 looking at the effect of using phonological awareness and phonics on learners’ reading skills. When a child is struggling to read, the first thing I do as a tutor is try to pinpoint the root of the reading problem.  Is he struggling with basic phonemic & phonological awareness (pre-reading skills), basic phonics skills, other phonics patterns, sight word recognition, fluency, comprehension, or text structure.  Perhaps the student is even dealing with other issues such as ADD, difficultyprocessing, difficult circumstances at home, lack of motivation or self-esteem.  These other issues can have a negative impact on reading as well. ...
