Education's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic Reveals Online Education’s Three Enduring Challenges | Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology

Education's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic Reveals Online Education’s Three Enduring Challenges | Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Abstract:

Closed campuses, working remotely, and physical distancing have changed the way we work, teach, learn, shop, attend conferences, and interact with family and friends. But the Covid-19 pandemic has not changed what we know about creating high-end online education. Two decades of research has shown that online education often fails to fulfill its promise, and the emergency shift to remote instruction has, for many, justified their distrust and dislike of online learning. Low interactivity remains a widely recognized short-coming of current online offerings. Low interactivity results, in part, from many faculty not feeling comfortable being themselves online. The long-advocated for era of authentic assessments is needed now more than ever. Finally, greater support is needed for both underrepresented students and for faculty to move beyond basic online instruction to create a strong continuum of care between the teaching and learning environment and the student support infrastructure. For those who have been long-term champions of online education, it has never been more important to confront the three biggest challenges that continue to haunt online education – interactivity, authenticity, and support. Only by confronting these challenges squarely can instructors, educational developers, and their institutions take huge steps towards better online instruction in the midst of a pandemic and make widespread, high-quality online education permanently part of the “new normal.”

One reason to have a PLN provided in this article is to get a fresh perspective.  I have been teaching for 8 years and 6 of those years has been the same grade level/content.  This is my reason for a PLN.  I have taught the same thing over and over again and I am always looking for different ways to look at things and new methods to try.  My way may not be the best way.

Why build a Personal Learning Network?

Why build a Personal Learning Network? | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

The danger busy teachers face is in becoming so engrossed in dealing with the day to day business of teaching that we make poor choices when it comes to time spent on our personal learning. We manage to find time for our students, for phone calls home, for report writing and programming all the while letting our engagement with learning slip down the list of things to do. Ensuring your personal learning is a priority is essential and should be seen against the value it brings to your students; enhance your teaching and you enhance their learning.

How to bring Social Media to a Conference focused on Learning... not Technology? | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Social Media has given educators the opportunity for self-directed, collaborative and connected learning. Network literacy, according to Eric Hellweg, requires a basic understanding of network technology, intelligence, capabilities and the ability of crafting one’s own network identity.

So, how do you bring the benefits of social media to a conference without making the conference ABOUT social media or technology? How do you share the basics of connecting and learning collaboratively with attendees who are newbies? ...

From development to co-creation

When it comes to developing the solution(s), once again it is not a matter of the Learning Consultant taking over the task – and delivering a fully-formed resource for them, but is more about helping the team to co-create their own solution. A great example of this is the collaboration platform that was built for LV= customer service reps. This initiative has now won a number of awards, and (as a judge for one of the awards) I am convinced its success is wholly due to the fact that it was the CSR team themselves who identified this approach as the solution to their problem, rather than it being imposed upon them.

Welcome to a country where teaching is a highly prized profession. Finland’s teachers have kept the nation near the top of the influential Pisa performance rankings since they were first published in 2001, leading to an influx of educational tourists as other teachers have endeavoured to learn from the Finnish experience.

The high-level training is the basis for giving young teachers a great deal of autonomy to choose what methods they use in the classroom – in contrast to England, Krokfors says, where she feels teaching is “somewhere between administration and giving tests to students”. In Finland, teachers are largely free from external requirements such as inspection, standardised testing and government control; school inspections were scrapped in the 1990s.

“Teachers need to have this high-quality education so they really do know how to use the freedom they are given, and learn to solve problems in a research-based way,” Krokfors says. “The most important thing we teach them is to take pedagogical decisions and judgments for themselves.”

2014 Technology and Professional Development Survey | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it
From the abacus to the calculator, the chalkboard to SMARTBoards, technology has had an immense impact on education and how students learn. However, technology is only one piece of the puzzle. Bill Gates said it best: “Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important.”
But how are teachers using technology? And how are teachers maintaining expertise in the areas of teaching and new technology?

Digital teaching portfolios for the enhancement of teaching and learning at the Hong Kong Institute of Education

Digital teaching portfolios for the enhancement of teaching and learning at the Hong Kong Institute of Education | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

The initiative of implementing digital teaching portfolios at the Hong Kong Institute of Education began in the year of 2011. At an individual level, digital teaching portfolio offers a context for articulating one’s teaching philosophy, reflecting upon one’s teaching, documenting evidence of teaching accomplishments for present and future employers, and through which, one’s pride and esteem for teaching, as well as teaching practices could be enhanced (De Rijdt et al., 2006; Wright et al., 1999). At a community level, teaching portfolio encourages inquiry-based dialogues on teaching, facilitates the process of mentoring junior teaching staff and offers resources which helps develop effective criteria for teaching in a tertiary institution (Quinlan, 2002; Wright et al., 1999).
