The Importance of Teaching Technology to Teachers

The Importance of Teaching Technology to Teachers | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

We’ve all said it. “Technology is the wave of the future.” There’s no denying that. It’s actually the wave of the present. I know that every teacher in academe today has heard that the need to use technology in the classroom is imperative now. If we are going to engage our students in the class discussions and the lectures, we need to be doing this engagement with the technologies they are familiar with. Just last month, The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) said the same thing. In their recent reconstruction of the definition of literacy in the 21st century ...

6 Shifts in Education Driven by Technology -- THE Journal

6 Shifts in Education Driven by Technology -- THE Journal | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it
Six critical shifts are happening in education right now that are being driven, at least in part, by technology. According to preliminary findings from an upcoming report, these changes affect everything from the role of the teacher to a rethinking of how schools themselves work.

No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait

Digital literacy is about more than just adding technology into the teaching we already do. The following common teaching practices that we have seen in classrooms as researchers and as parents of school-age children do not help develop digital literacy and may even kill students’ motivation to develop their savvy use of technology and the Internet. We must stop these practices. Immediately.

yikes, a scary thought. I'm finding that it is partnership with parents that is making the most difference in our school community re: DL education.
John Williams's comment, September 4, 2013 3:57 PM
Bonnie I agree parents are important today so many seem to be tuned out to the needs of there children, it is a lot more than just material needs, that parents need to provide, and with the prevalence of single parent homes, it is even harder. I feel as much for the parent of these homes as I do for the children it can not be easy wearing all the hats.

Really? It’s My Job To Teach Technology? | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Why do I need to teach movie making? Because you want students to create good content that they can share.

Why do I need to teach how to search? Because you want students to have the skill of evaluating and analyzing.

Digital Natives: Ten Years After

A lot has been written about the digital native since the coining of the term about ten years ago. A lot of what has been originally written by the digital native has been taken as common sense and has been repeated many times in many educational contexts, but until recently the true nature of the digital native has not been explored. Because the myth of the digital native is still alive and well, this article aims to examine the findings that have come out of recent research with regard to digital natives and their true nature, as well as turn a critical gaze onto the assumptions, taken as common sense knowledge, of what the characteristics of digital natives are. ...

An eye opener that you will never forget

"Technology, automation, and human could be blended together to boost efficiency, leading to a new dimension of human living in this modern world of technology.

I have been thinking about what it means when education is automated, with such a metaphor of education as mass consumption of food by human.

What would happen when technology is used to drive learning and education, on a massive scale?"... (Sui Fai John Mak, http://goo.gl/P44D8)

“We Don’t Need No Stink’n Textbooks” #Beyondthetextbook

“We Don’t Need No Stink’n Textbooks” #Beyondthetextbook | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

In order for educators to teach kids, they need something to teach. Exactly what it is that educators should teach has often been discussed and continues to be the focus of ongoing discussions for over many generations. The delivery of that content, in regard to what to teach, has never been of great concern, because the bulk of it came in the form of text, delivered in a book called the textbook....

Facing the TABLET generation

Facing the TABLET generation | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Although our students are far more tech savvy than their parents and are perpetually connected to the Internet, they know a lot less than they think. In a time when information literacy is increasingly crucial to life and work, not teaching kids how to search for information is like sending them out into the world without knowing how to read. Much of the time they opt for Google, which is like being tossed into the ocean without a paddle. Only an info-literate student can find the right bit of information amid the sea of irrelevance and misinformation, and we need professionals to advocate for teaching information literacy from an early age ...

Ten Reasons New Teachers Aren't Using Technology

Ten Reasons New Teachers Aren't Using Technology | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it
Alenka Andrin's insight:

John Spencer: "For years, ed tech folks said things like, "The younger generations will embrace technology in the classroom." But I'm not so sure. When I taught a technology workshop, I noticed many new teachers who viewed it as a nice bonus but not as transformative. I noticed many more who believed that technology was inherently distracting and addicting.

It has me thinking about why so many new teachers are so resistant to using the current available technology ..."

Being a Digital Native Isn’t Enough

Being a Digital Native Isn’t Enough | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

It is our role as teachers to help students develop the skills to problem solve independently and collaboratively use 21st-century skills while not relying on technology to do all of the thinking for them. Just because these students are digital natives, does not mean that they do not need guidance to navigate the digital world–both in terms of learning how to discern important and relevant information from a large swath of data, and also to be able to inquire and solve problems that take time, thought, and energy.
