What should we talk about? The authenticity of textbook topics

What should we talk about? The authenticity of textbook topics | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Topics presented in textbooks and covered in language classrooms are crucial parts of language teaching, as they facilitate student engagement, willingness to communicate, and ultimately, learning. However, whilst researchers and practitioners frequently discuss the authenticity of the language in textbooks, the authenticity and usefulness of textbook topics are rarely discussed or evaluated. To investigate their authenticity, topics from ELT textbooks and naturally occurring conversations were collected, categorized, and compared. ...

Flipboard As a Textbook Replacement | The Thinking Stick | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

"OK…so let me clarify that title. I honestly think textbooks are on their way out…or at least I hope they are. Really it should read “Flipboard as core curation artifact for classrooms” but that wouldn’t have you here reading now would it. "

Developing digital textbooks – A publisher’s experience in the Philippines

Developing digital textbooks – A publisher’s experience in the Philippines | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Dr. Lloyd Espiritu of Vibal Publishing (Philippines) observed that as students become more technology-savvy, they demand that learning resources be available in their everyday tools like computers, tablets and phones, thus putting a pressure for publishers to go digital. However, developing digital textbooks brings a new set of concerns in practically every aspect of the book development cycle, including content development, editorial work, and distribution.

How Teacher-Created Free Online Resources Are Changing the Classroom

How Teacher-Created Free Online Resources Are Changing the Classroom | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Some of the limitations of textbooks are they tend to be very non-interactive, kind of impersonal, and they’re not very flexible in terms of regional differences. For all these reasons, a lot of teachers don’t use them anymore. Instead, they create their own curriculum, in collaboration with other teachers, out of materials on the internet and adapted to the needs of their classrooms.

The e-textbook transformation

The e-textbook transformation | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

A new wave of e-textbooks is giving students more than just words and a few hotlinks on a digital page. Publishers over the last few years have been adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes designed to engage students more deeply in their learning.

A transformation which is not a revolution. It will take time and effort.  It's important we give it the space to take its natural course.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, July 25, 2014 2:11 PM

Thank you Nik. I like reading about innovations like e-textbook transformation that make learning more accessible to all students.

Raj Shekhar Mishra's curator insight, March 20, 2015 3:07 AM

To engage students more deeply in their learning publishers are making the textbook a hands-on activity by adding video, interactive maps and gamified quizzes.  The goal is not simply to replace traditional textbooks with e-books but to fundamentally change teaching and learning .The best learning strategy is the multi-modal approach—you can hear it, you can see it, you can manipulate and interact with the content.

Active Textbook is an interesting service that you can use to turn your PDFs into multimedia documents. The basic idea behind the service is that you can upload PDFs and add pictures, links, and videos that are displayed when students read your PDF through the Active Textbook viewer. While reading your PDF through Active Textbook students can highlight, draw, and add comments to the document.

“We Don’t Need No Stink’n Textbooks” #Beyondthetextbook

“We Don’t Need No Stink’n Textbooks” #Beyondthetextbook | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

In order for educators to teach kids, they need something to teach. Exactly what it is that educators should teach has often been discussed and continues to be the focus of ongoing discussions for over many generations. The delivery of that content, in regard to what to teach, has never been of great concern, because the bulk of it came in the form of text, delivered in a book called the textbook....

E is for eCoursebook

E is for eCoursebook | Languages, ICT, education | Scoop.it

Apple’s plan to launch electronic publishing of school textbooks set social networks a-twitter, triggering flurries of excitement and apprehension in equal measure.  To expedite this initiative, Apple have launched an app, called iBooks Author, which allows wannabe textbook authors to create interactive ebooks and self-publish them (of course, only on an iPad, and with Apple taking a nice little chunk of the profits).

The enthusiasts have been talking up the way this technology will open up textbook writing to anyone with an iPad, while allowing material to be customized for very specific markets. Moreover, by shortcutting the laborious production processes of print publishing, plus the huge costs incurred, e-textbooks will be cheaper, as well as more eco-friendly, and less a burden on kids’ tender spines.
