Late last spring at a New Bedford Arts and Culture Plan meeting on the Zeiterion Theatre stage, Aneshia Savino brought up an interesting point.While many artists and arts leaders often brought up the need for seeking diversity in arts and culture, the discussion was almost always centered on ethnic or racial identity.Sexuality or gender identity was never a part of the conversation.

“I think the Seattle Fringe Festival is really taking on the role of mentoring and offering up opportunities for the artist to learn things,” Jeffrey Robert said. Robert, who performs as The Gay Uncle, will be part of the 2017 version of the rebooted festival featuring “more than 30 producers of Theatre, Dance, Improv, Burlesque, Musical, Opera, Drag Performance, Solo Performance, Experimental, Clown, and Performance Art” at Capitol Hill’s Eclectic Theater and the Seattle Center Armory. Tickets run between $10 and $15 per show.

Art Gallery 21, in partnership with the City of Wilton Manors, the Central Area Neighborhood Association of Wilton Manors, The Pride Center at Equality Park, Stonewall Museum & Archive and The Humanity Project, will host the traveling Smithsonian exhibit "The Way We Worked" from Friday, March 24, 2017 through Saturday, May 6, 2017. Through rare videos, fascinating interviews and compelling photos taken over 150 years, viewers will be able to explore how the opportunities provided by work became central to the American dream. Art Gallery 21 is one of only eight locations the exhibit will travel to this year.

After art critic Douglas Crimp moved to the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan in 1969, he became a regular customer at Max’s Kansas City, a restaurant and art bar on Park Avenue. Max’s had two rooms, one in front and one in back, and members of Andy Warhol’s Factory could reliably be found in the latter. As he passed through the front room, Crimp would greet the “artist-regulars” he had come to know during his first two years in the city, but he found himself inexorably pulled to the back, whose “charged atmosphere” he loved.
