But Shanghai Pride didn't include the typical parade filled with people waving rainbow flags. In China, parades are mostly reserved for displays of military strength. So, organizers have to use a little bit of ingenuity to pull off one of the country's longest-running Pride events.

Before Qiguang Li could pass through customs and step onto U.S. soil for the first time, he faced a three-hour detention where he learned that he needed to be more candid about his identity. It was September 2015, after a long flight from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Li came with another man, Wei Xu, who asked a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer whether the two of them could go through the border screening together. "What's your relationship?" asked the officer. They said they were friends. "Then you can't."

The micro-blogging platform Sina Weibo has begun purging posts and comments that carry the hashtag #les, which is short for lesbian. The quiet ban was first discovered by users of Weibo’s “super topic” (超话) feature, which allows individuals to create online communities organized around hashtags. Weibo users are also no longer able to use the rainbow flag — widely recognized as a symbol of LGBT rights and social movements — in their bios.
