At the time, same-sex marriage had become legal in nearby Minnesota, though it still was not legal in their home state of Wisconsin. As the men explain, they’ve been together for so long they’ve always considered themselves married. Several years prior they had filed for a domestic partnership because that was all Wisconsin had to offer for same-sex couples.

In the picture the family looks like any other, and that's the point. The photos illustrating love and what it means to be a family were part of a recent one-night exhibit at Work Release in Norfolk hosted by the LGBT Center of Hampton Roads. Andrew W. Roberts, the center’s marketing and event manager, said they're the center of a stigma reduction campaign that looks to raise awareness of LGBT families in coastal Virginia.
