The Source LGBT-plus Center officially launched last March with a fundraising goal of $5,000 to cover its initial expenses. Shortly after the B.A.R. first reported about the campaign and plans for the center, its boosters easily surpassed the total.

Gil Ramirez — chin up, chest out and wearing a big, red flower pinned to his black-and-white-striped sweater — crossed the main street. Three men in a car flung Spanish slurs for "gay man." "Thank you, but you're not my type," Ramirez yelled back with a shrug. Another group of men standing outside the pool hall (Mendota's version of a Greek chorus, always offering commentary on events around them) laughed. Ramirez had won that round.

One year anniversary amid rapid growth... In the past year, theSOURCE LGBT+ Center has held bike rallies, marched in local parades, held book club readings, tabled at numerous community events, been featured in local media, helped coordinate the USDA's Rural Pride convention (the first on the west coast), formed groups supporting the transgender community, and offered connections and referrals to hundreds of individuals looking for medical and social services.
