Pride Journey: Grand Rapids/Saugatuck | #ILoveGay | Scoop.it

For the past few years, I’ve heard about a small town in Michigan known for its LGBTQ friendliness and charm, but it wasn’t until recently that I had the opportunity to visit Saugatuck and its neighboring town, Douglas. If you don’t live within driving distance, you’ll probably have to fly into Grand Rapids, another Midwestern city worth exploring. The journey will be well worth it.

That was the message conveyed by area business leaders during the spring luncheon hosted by Equality Michigan and the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce recently at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Brian Walker, Herman Miller president and CEO; Rob Vallentine, global director of corporate citizenship for Dow Chemical; and Graci Harkema, senior account recruiting manager with TEKsystems, provided insight to attendees on how LGBT inclusion has enhanced their companies and their own experiences. Rob Sparks attended his first Pride Festival in 2016 in Grand Rapids, shortly after relocating to the city for a job with MIX 95.7. “It was crazy. It was a very cool experience,” he said. “I think that year there were 8,000 to 10,000 people there." He said the experience made a big impact.

A runner-up from “The Voice” will headline a day of concerts this weekend at Calder Plaza as part of the Grand Rapids Pride Festival. All proceeds from the week-long festival go toward the Grand Rapids Pride Center’s efforts to support and empower the region’s LGBTQ community through services and outreach.

Our LGBT Fund at Grand Rapids Community Foundation recently awarded grants totaling $47,500 to four West Michigan nonprofits that serve homeless and at-risk lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, youth. The endowed fund was launched recently thanks to donors Carol Sarosik and Shelley Padnos. It is sustained with donations from the community. Grant recipients Arbor Circle received $20,000 for the Safe Impact/True Colors program. The organization plans to establish a partnership with the nationally recognized True Colors Fund, created by singer Cyndi Lauper. The . . .
