Stuart Gardener is typical of a farming 20-something. Having grown up with agriculture “in his blood”, the 28-year-old would love to have his own farm one day. In the meantime, he’s working all hours – renting ground, rearing cattle and contracting, while holding down a full-time job in a local country store. He studied at an agricultural college. He was a member of a Young Farmers Club. He’s also – and this is where his experience differs from many of his peers – gay.
