Mayor Van Johnson will introduce PROUD Savannah on Wednesday. The taskforce will be “dedicated to ensuring Savannah’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities can work and live in a welcoming and safe environment”, according to the city.

The Savannah LGBT Center recently opened its doors for the first time at 1515 Bull St. A cross-section of the LGBT community, friends, family and allies were all on hand to welcome the opening of Savannah’s first dedicated space for LGBT support groups, mentorship, community gatherings, crisis outreach, health services and advocacy.

Thirty years ago, to be gay and out anywhere took guts. To be gay and out in Savannah? That took a special kind of fortitude in the face of all that Southern propriety.
