Every aspect of life can be guided by artificial intelligence algorithms – from choosing what route to take for your morning commute, to deciding whom to take on a date, to complex legal and judicial matters such as predictive policing.

Big tech companies like Google and Facebook use AI to obtain insights on their gargantuan trove of detailed customer data. This allows them monetize users’ collective preferences through practices such as micro-targeting, a strategy used by advertisers to narrowly target specific sets of users.

I’ve written in the past about understanding the Terms of sites you are asking students to use and been interviewed about the implications of social media in classes. This year, one of the things I want to focus on is bringing those two things together. It is important that we don’t just know the terms we are asking our students to work under when we enforce the use of social media or other proprietary digital platforms for course work, it is important we know the implications and the devastating effects these tools and platforms might have in the future for our students.

Digital Literacy: An NMC Horizon Project Strategic Brief was commissioned by Adobe Systems to explore an increasingly pressing challenge for United States higher education institutions: advancing digital literacy among students and faculty. Unfortunately, lack of agreement on what comprises digital literacy is impeding many colleges and universities from formulating adequate policies and programs. The aim of this publication is to establish a shared vision of digital literacy for higher education leaders by illuminating key definitions and models along with best practices and recommendations for implementing successful digital literacy initiatives. Findings from our digital literacy survey as well as from the NMC Horizon Project environmental scanning process will depict the benefits of digital tools and approaches, providing positive exemplars in higher education. Adobe’s support of this publication is significant as their technologies are increasingly being adopted by colleges and universities to foster greater digital literacy, particularly the Adobe Creative Cloud and the design, production, and storytelling apps it encompasses.

Technology and modernization are increased and students are not prepared for this 21st century. Education is obsolete and has not changed over 1000 years. For that reason, Dr Cristine Ortiz is creating a new type of university and education where the principle goals are: focuses on the transdisciplinary interface between technology and humanity emphasizes personalized, holistic and research-based pedagogy employs dynamic organizational structures and a high quality, low cost, scalable financial model, to serve more underserved and underprivileged students.Ortiz want to change the education and this is the firs step to do it.

In this video, Sherry Turkle talks about how as a society today, we tend to rely heavily on and expect more from technology rather than each other. She discusses how people's use of technology has changed from the previous generation to the present one, which is currently growing up with technology. After interviewing several people, she was able to conclude that people were so focused on their digital lives that they were becoming less aware of their real lives. For example, she talks about how people would often text at inappropriate times, such as while driving or attending a funeral. I agreed with Turkle when she mentioned how people often depict their social media profile in a positive light, in order to make themselves look better, even though that is not how their life is in reality. I highly recommend watching this video, as it will make you more aware of what you put out there in the digital world, as well as reminding you that your real lives also matter.

In this #LTHEchat we will discussing the role of the library in student learning. Information has changed from being nearly entirely text and paper based to a wide range of media many of which are available electronically. This has changed the way that university libraries see themselves. They are no longer just a physical space but a virtual one too. The question is have libraries evolved quickly enough to maximise the student learning experience across all disciplines in the 21st century? And are students developing the information literacy skills they need for the future employment?

This report provides new evidence on the effects of digital technologies on the demand for skills and discusses key policies for skills development adapted to the digital economy. Workers across an increasing range of occupations need generic and/or advanced ICT skills to use such technologies effectively. More fundamentally, the diffusion of digital technologies is changing how work is done, raising demand for complementary skills such as information processing, self-direction, problem solving and communication. This report discusses measures that can help to ensure that the diffusion of digital technologies is accompanied by the development of the skills needed for their effective use, an increase in the responsiveness of national skills development systems to changes in skills demand and of new learning opportunities created by digital technologies.

More and more adults are going back to school to learn new skills. The National Center for Education Statistics data show a 7 percent growth in college enrollment for adults over the age of 24 between 2005 and 2015. This is projected to increase to 12 percent by 2019.

A large percent of these are community college students who are either enrolled in two-year associate’s degree programs or technical education certificates, or are simply taking classes to learn new skills. In spring 2016, over 2.1 million adults over the age of 24 were enrolled in two-year public community colleges. These students represent approximately one-third of all adult students enrolled in colleges.
