Friends don’t let friends use Facebook

Friends don’t let friends use Facebook | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Facebook, on the other hand, only offers its users a forum to connect and share information. Facebook’s income derives from selling targeted advertising to be delivered to those same users, based on preferences the site has learned from their comments, friends, and preferences. It has no goods or services to sell, and its users don’t buy anything. Thus, its only product to take to market is, in fact, its users’ data. (source)

Earlier today John Sutton asked for my “top few accessible reads overviewing digital literacies”. I was walking my son to his new school at the time, so responded that I would write a quick blog post later. Well, here it is.

Hands up if you've got digital literacy questions like these:

How do I know I'm doing the right thing, when there isn't a 'right way' to do things?
What I should be doing, when they are so many things to do?
What digital literacy mistakes am I making without realising?

My guess is you have, because it never ends right?

Making sense of the 8 Elements of Digital Literacy

Making sense of the 8 Elements of Digital Literacy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Over the past few months the Pride Project Team have been exploring how we might make use of Doug Belshaw’s framework for understanding digital literacies (outlined in his book The Essential Elements of Digital Literacies and in his Ed.D thesis). Following the excellent work undertaken by our researchers Jo and Charlotte in mapping the discipline-specific statements of graduate skills, attributes and practices to the 8 elements outlined in Doug’s book, we are now beginning to delve deeper into what these elements might mean for students at the University of Bath. One output from this work will be the creation of a diagnostic skills survey where students are able to self-assess their digital literacies and be given guidance as to the options and pathways available to them to develop their skills, attributes and practices.

How to create a sustainable web presence • Literacies

What the Web has done to documents it is doing to just about every institution it touches. The Web isn’t primarily about replacing atoms with bits so that we can, for example, shop on line or make our supply chains more efficient. The Web isn’t even simply empowering groups, such as consumers, that have traditionally had the short end of the stick. Rather, the Web is changing our understanding of what puts things together in the first place. We live in a world that works well if the pieces are stable and have predictable effects on one another. We think of complex institutions and organizations as being like well-oiled machines that work reliably and almost serenely so long as their subordinate pieces perform their designated tasks.

Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy.
