Creativity can be the bridge between science and humanities education

In his famous Rede Lecture of 1959, chemist and novelist C P Snow spoke of the separation of science and the humanities, and the lack of respect and understanding that often exists between the fields. He argued that this was detrimental to the future success of the country as many creative breakthroughs come from the interaction between the two cultures. Snow put a large part of the blame on what he called “our fanatical belief in educational specialisation” and focusing on “producing a tiny elite educated in one academic skill”. Unfortunately, not much seems to have changed.

Our students’ future will most likely look quite different from our past. If we want them to be successful after graduation it is critical that we help them develop the skills they will need in five, ten, or fifteen years from now.

In the past the “3 R’s” were good enough (even though only one of those skills actually started with an ‘R’ - Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic).

For our students future they need the “4 C’s” to be successful.

Promoting inventiveness in the classroom

Promoting inventiveness in the classroom | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

We are all familiar with invention—the process of creating something new and useful. But what about the creativity factors that play a large role in this process? The form of creativity leading to invention is called inventiveness. How can you lead your teachers or colleagues to promote inventiveness in the classroom?

The Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Iowa includes a great overview of inventiveness in their “Invent Iowa Curriculum Guide”. Invent Iowa, started in 1987, was created to help teachers promote the invention process in their classrooms as well as allow students to showcase their inventions at state and local conventions. The Invent Iowa guide states inventiveness includes four components.
1. Fluency– the ability to brainstorm
2. Flexibility– the ability to think in new and different ways
3. Elaboration– the ability to add details or missing parts
4. Originality– the ability to create things that are new

We can all think of instances throughout history when high-stakes situations led to innovative discoveries or notable creative achievements: the space race that came out of the Cold War; NASA’s quick response to a failing air filtration system aboard Apollo 13; the development of Enigma machines during World War II. But most of the time, in day-to-day life, stress actually hampers creativity.

10 Useful Tools to Craft Beautiful Graphics for Social Media

10 Useful Tools to Craft Beautiful Graphics for Social Media | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Visuals are the currency of sharing on social media. Text-only updates can only convey so much and get so far. Here are 3 stats that prove the worth of creating graphics.

First, 66% of all social media posts are or include images.

Second, forget native visual platforms, like Instagram and Pinterest, that allow photo sharing. In 2013, Facebook became the largest photo sharing website, with its users uploading 350 million photos every day.

Third, use of images was rated as the most important social media optimization tactic, in a 2014 survey by Adobe and Software Advice.

And, it’s not just limited to social media…Content with relevant visuals also gets 94% more views than content without. Even social media platforms now focus on images in their redesigns....

Each spring in their Skills for Tomorrow class, the fifth grade engages in an exercise in empathy. Following the model of NPR’s StoryCorps project, students pair up and share significant life stories and experiences. Then, with the help of an iPad and a choice of apps, students retell their partner’s story using images, video, and words.

As they work on this project, students leverage technology as a tool for creation, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking – four skills commonly known as “The 4C’s.”

On the Edge of Chaos: Where Creativity Flourishes

So, can educators help their students become more creative? Some teachers are moving in that direction, loosening the rules, giving students choice, celebrating ideas and behaviors that challenge the status quo, but without a drastic reimagining of the structures within which educators work, true creativity could be hard to find in school.

Creativity is a human quality that exists in every single one of us

Everybody can think creatively – including you.

When you think about creativity, it might be highly creative people like Mozart, da Vinci or Einstein who spring to mind. They were all considered to be “geniuses” for their somewhat unique talents that led to global innovation in their fields. Their type of creativity is what’s known as “Big C creativity” (or historical) and is not very common in everyday life. Not all of us can create works of art or music or scientific theories that are new to the world.

Tips on How to Motivate Yourself to Deliver Great Content - Relevance | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Writing is not as easy as many think. It’s more than just sitting down and typing. The very process takes concentration and inspiration, but not all days are motivational that way. Sometimes, writing is like pushing a mountain to move. It won’t budge no matter how hard you try or effort you put into it. However, instead of trying to move the mountain, why not just take a nice walk and climb over it?

Why Problem Finders Are More Creative Than Problem Solvers - InformED | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I know a handful of people who are natural problem-solvers—skilled at identifying the root of an issue and taking keenly selected, highly efficient steps to achieve a desired outcome or change—but who claim they “aren’t creative.” Such attitudes and statements stem from a couple of things, not least of which is the false but lingering notion that creativity is for artists or the artistically-minded (untrue, as we’ll see below), and also includes the less commonly examined myth that problem-solving happens in the sciences and not the arts.

How to Unlock Your Creative Potential Through Visual Thinking | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Everyone is born creative. If you don’t think so, just recall how you were as a child.

You probably did crazy things like draw hairy, six-armed monsters, make up stories of being a mighty warrior or try to build an amazing contraption that would fly you to the moon and back.

Then you grew up, and like the rest of us, learned to suppress your wildest thoughts and most ambitious dreams.
