Future eLearning Tech 2016: Wearable Training Experiences

Future eLearning Tech 2016: Wearable Training Experiences | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"One of the hottest trends in the internet of things (IoT) is wearable tech. It’s a trend that is already available, but remains a little clumsy and mostly priced outside the budget of the average consumer. The Fitbit, Apple Watch, and other activity tracking devices have been the most successful wearable tech. And while they are really good at collecting data, their intended purpose is to change behavior. Hey, isn’t that what we strive for? Sure it is. We should be thinking about wearable tech as a viable training technology."

Special librarians need to keep our eye on the Internet of Things, since it not only reduces the friction between user and their goals for turning on lightbulbs, meeting with each other, and managing their viewing habits, it’s already a long way into exploring the content universes that they rely on.

Spreading digital fluency is now a core responsibility of academic libraries, and Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) are poised to amplify the utility and reach of library services like never before. These are just two of the revelations part of the New Media Consortium’s (NMC) University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur, Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB), ETH Library, and the Association of College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Annual Horizon Report: 2017 Library Edition.

How to create a sustainable web presence • Literacies

What the Web has done to documents it is doing to just about every institution it touches. The Web isn’t primarily about replacing atoms with bits so that we can, for example, shop on line or make our supply chains more efficient. The Web isn’t even simply empowering groups, such as consumers, that have traditionally had the short end of the stick. Rather, the Web is changing our understanding of what puts things together in the first place. We live in a world that works well if the pieces are stable and have predictable effects on one another. We think of complex institutions and organizations as being like well-oiled machines that work reliably and almost serenely so long as their subordinate pieces perform their designated tasks.

What does the imminent arrival of the intelligent campus mean for universities and colleges? | Jisc | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There has been plenty of hype over artificial intelligence and the internet of things. We believe it may be time to put aside the cynicism that this kind of hype generates and look seriously at how we can take advantage of these emerging technologies to improve the student experience, research and the management of our campuses.

Abstract

This White Paper presents an overview of some of the key issues surrounding the development and deployment of the collection of technologies commonly referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). The technological underpinnings of the IoT are discussed in the context of a rapidly developing new field of technology and with an acknowledgement that there is some way to go before commonly accepted standards are agreed upon and that the commercial case, particularly in the domestic sphere, for the IoT is yet to be made. Examples of current IoT deployments across a range of sectors are presented. This paper also explores some of the social issues surrounding the IoT where security and privacy concerns are inhibiting the diffusion of IoT products and services and where much work needs to be done if end-users are to accept this new technology. Driving the development of IoT technologies is the demand for data and the potential for a revolution in how we understand our environments through the embedding of sensors and computational intelligence in everyday objects. The collection and analysis of this data will create new types of companies and change the business models of many existing ones. It is uncertain what the IoT landscape will look like in 2020 but the opportunities for data experts are considerable. The paper concludes with a note on the potential relevance of IoT to libraries.

Big Data News, Events, and Expert Opinion

Preliminary research on how the Internet of Things will impact education may lead you to believe students will soon be connected to an iPad, RFID scanning objects and getting their own personalized curriculum delivered to their desk. It’s a dreamy new world of individually tailored lessons. It might be prudent to remember how computers were supposed to completely alter the way students learn decades ago. Yet anyone who took a “computer 101” class in high school may know tech in the classroom is not the futuristic bonanza we want it to be.
