Stop teaching. Start Learning with Educational Games

Stop teaching. Start Learning with Educational Games | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Janet is a student in a top university in Singapore. I had arranged to meet her to chat about her experience with classroom learning. We agreed on a cafe at Bugis called Mellower Coffee. One that is popular with students, she says.

Great! A new hangout.

I arrived and saw her at a corner. Plugged into earphones, she was engrossed in some videos. Youtube it seems. But this video was different. It looked like the video of a professor teaching in a class. But instead of being in a classroom, she is in a very nice cafe and having a nice coffee.

Revising is an integral part of learning and can be fun when games are used. I have already mentioned how Kahoot.it, Flip Quiz and Socrative are great resources to use in lessons, as well as  how Edmodo's Quiz feature saves teachers time and gives students the chance to do the quiz either in class or within a certain time frame chosen by the teacher.

Following on from yesterday's post, this is a list of student response systems collated from various sources. Educational Web Tools to Empower Students Voice in Class

Educational Web Tools to Empower Students Voice in Class | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

At the core of progressive pedagogy is the empowerment of students by giving them a voice in class and making them part of the decision making. Unlike traditional instruction where  students are viewed as passive receivers of  pre-designed knowledge, a progressive instruction is primarily student-centered and dialogic in nature. It views students as subjects with a sense of agency capable of co-constructing their own knowledge. This pedagogical stance is especially popularized by educationists such as John Dewy, Paulo Freire, Maxine Greene, and Vygotsky.

Some of The Best Tools for Creating Surveys and Polls in Class

Some of The Best Tools for Creating Surveys and Polls in Class | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Over the last few months we have reviewed a number of interesting web tools and mobile apps teachers can use to collect students feedback. And as we have argued elsewhere, access to students feedback can positively impact both the teaching and learning process. On the one hand, it provides teachers with a discerning window through which they can assess their teaching methodologies, assess students comprehension, and based on gleaned insights, formulate working plans to meet students learning needs. On the other hand, the act of providing feedback empowers students with a voice, makes them feel valued and that their opinion matters and therefore engages them on a deeper level in the learning process.

I’m in 'Kahoots' with Technology in the Classroom

I’m in 'Kahoots' with Technology in the Classroom | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Teaching tool or distraction? One of the most vexing issues for faculty today is what to do about cell phones in the classroom. According to a study conducted by Dr. Jim Roberts, a marketing professor at Baylor University, college students spend between eight to ten hours daily on their cell phones. Regardless of whatever “no cell phone” policies we attempt to enforce in our classrooms, many of our students are sneakily checking Instagram or texting friends when they’re supposed to be engaged in solving matrices or analyzing Shakespeare.

How Latest EdTech Tools Help Teachers Do Their Jobs More Effectively

How Latest EdTech Tools Help Teachers Do Their Jobs More Effectively | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Advanced edtech tools in the classroom can have a good influence on kids.

They can also help teachers do their jobs with a lot more ease and determination. However, it’s tough to be 100% pro technology as far as education is concerned. Some are not that happy that it slowly but steady becomes omnipresent in the classroom. Because it offers students a unique opportunity to learn in a more fun and productive way, immediate access to smart devices in the classroom changes the learning model. But it might be for the better.

This is a great way to get information on student learning in a way that doesn't take a lot of time for the teacher individually.  It would also help the teacher to make an individualized plan to help each student from where they are at.
