A Lesson From the Evolution of My Bookmarks | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
One of the questions that readers ask me on a fairly regular basis is, "how do you keep track of everything?" The answer to that has remained largely the same for the last decade. My process is that when I find something interesting I bookmark it, review it, and, if I like it, I write about it here on Free Technology for Teachers. Once I write about something I tend to remember it better than if I just looked at it and tested it for a little while. The one part of the process that has changed over the years is just where my bookmarks get saved.

Getting Started with OneNote - Microsoft in Education

Getting Started with OneNote - Microsoft in Education | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Learning is more powerful and dynamic with tools that are already right in front of you – and it’s up to educators to impress this on students in the classroom.

With Microsoft OneNote, educators can create digital notebooks that support academic standards and education outcomes across disciplines and tasks, such as writing, reading, mathematics, science, history, CTE, and elective courses. Students may use OneNote across content areas and grade levels, and use OneNote to compile and organize unstructured information, research, and content. OneNote also supports research, collaboration, information management, communication, note taking, journaling, reflective writing, and academic requirements.

Practical Ed Tech Tip of the Week – Try Microsoft’s Free Learning Tools | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I’m guilty of having a bias in favor of all things G Suite for Education that sometimes leads me to ignore some of the excellent products that Microsoft has been developing. I’m aware of that bias and I’ve been making a concerted effort over the last six or seven weeks to give more Microsoft products and honest try. One of those products is the free Learning Tools add-in for OneNote and Word.

Evernote, OneNote, and Beyond: The 14 Best Note-Taking Apps

Evernote, OneNote, and Beyond: The 14 Best Note-Taking Apps | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"There are plenty of ways to take notes. You could carry a notebook and pen in your pocket, or scribble thoughts on a napkin at lunch. Or, better yet, you could use a notebook app, so you always have a way to store your thoughts—even if there's not a pen nearby.

"Notebook apps come in all shapes and sizes. From simple plain-text notebooks to apps that recognize your handwriting and record audio, you can find a notebook app for anything you want to remember.

"We took dozens of note-taking apps for a test drive in order to separate the must-try options from the weak ones. First, you’ll find full-featured note-taking apps, including Evernote, OneNote, and Simplenote—the popular notebook apps that can save everything. Then, we'll look at handwriting apps, designed for scribbling your thoughts on tablets.

"And if that's not enough, there's a bonus section at the end with “one-trick ponies”—note-taking apps that do a single job very well, and might be a great companion app for your preferred notebook app."

Oh gosh, not another word processing software, but then no, I guess, One note is more versatile and it is free too! In times when the concept of BYOD has been in place and when the device has to be small enough, then it makes sense to use an IPad or a tab. One note works quite well on tabs so it makes sense to use it more regularly.

Digital Productivity for work, study and life.

Digital Productivity for work, study and life. | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The Technology Enhanced Learning team recently ran a bitesize online course for University of Sussex staff looking at Digital Productivity. This blog post will explore some ideas around that topic.

The course was conceived as a way to introduce staff to ways of working that take advantage of digital technologies to enhance or expand on practices they would previously have carried out manually. These techniques are equally useful for students and for ‘life admin’ for everyone.

It is very tempting to launch into lists of so-called productivity apps – and there are very many lists of that sort on the web – but if you are really going to find new, better ways of working then it is important to spend a little time thinking about where you are now and what you want to achieve

Back in December I decided that I needed to spend some time giving some of Microsoft's products a good, honest try. I did this to be able to give a more balanced comparison to rival Google products. Some of the Microsoft products I don't like as much as Google's offerings, I still prefer Google Forms. And some of Microsoft's products I like better than the Google equivalent. For example, I now like OneNote more than Google Keep.
