Feature post by Clark Quinn There’s been quite the spate of discussion of late about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and adaptive learning.  You’ve no doubt seen the commercials where Watson conducts conversations with talents from Bob Dylan to teacher Ashley Bryant, the latter in which great learning outcomes are proposed. And I think it’s important to …

What Faculty Should Know About Adaptive Learning - M Feldstein

What Faculty Should Know About Adaptive Learning - M Feldstein | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

I was honored to be asked by the American Federation of Teachers to write an article on what their membership should know about adaptive learning technologies....

The phrase “adaptive learning” is an umbrella term that applies to an incredibly broad range of technologies and techniques with very different educational applications. The common thread is that they all involve software that observes some aspect of student performance and adjusts what it presents to each student based on those observations. In other words, all adaptive software tries to mimic some aspect of what a good teacher does, given that every student has individual needs.

Just Enough, Just In Time, Just For Me: The Basics Of Adaptive Learning

Traditional education assumes that students by and large all learn in the same way: Start from Problem A and work on through to Problem Z. Bogged down on Problem D, a student will likely fail a quiz and scramble to catch up.

Adaptive learning technologies work from the premise that there are other, more personalized ways of acquiring knowledge. Essentially, adaptive learning proposes that technology can be leveraged to mold the learning experience to individual students’ needs and learning styles. This style of teaching “tailors the educational process to the strengths and weaknesses of individual students,” according to education trends sites.

elearnspace › Adaptive Learners, Not Adaptive Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Basically, we have to shift education from focusing mainly on the acquisition of knowledge (the central underpinning of most adaptive learning software today) to the development of learner states of being (affect, emotion, self-regulation, goal setting, and so on). Adaptive learners are central to the future of work and society, whereas adaptive learning is more an attempt to make more efficient a system of learning that is no longer needed.

5 ways adaptive learning is evolving « Educational Technology

BY LAURA DEVANEY, eCampus News

A new report examines how adaptive learning is changing both the institutional and supplier landscapes. It’s changing the way faculty teach, building new features into technology products for institutions, and is slowly coming out of the test pilot bubble. Learning to Adapt 2.0 notes that institutions will need to address cost, access and quality of adaptive learning tools to ensure success. It also provides an overview of the supplier landscape. In the report, the firm defines adaptive learning as “solutions that take a sophisticated, data-driven, and in some cases, non-linear approach to instruction and remediation, adjusting to each learner’s interactions and demonstrated performance level and subsequently anticipating what types of content and resources meet the learner’s needs at a specific point in time.”

What if You Blended Adaptive Learning With MOOCs? | Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

MOOCs and adaptive-learning software are often billed as two of the most potentially game-changing technologies in higher education. The White House, for one, is excited to see what might happen if and when those two technologies meet.

It would seem natural to combine massive-open-online-course platforms, which accommodate thousands of students, with adaptive-learning software, which responds to the needs of individual students. But so far that has not happened.

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology this month wrote a letter to President Obama briefing him on MOOCs. In the letter, released on Wednesday, the group told the president that while “the jury is out” on the long-term implications of MOOCs, the scale of the massive courses could yet improve access to higher education while reducing its cost.

How to teach music and art online | Edudemic

For centuries, the landscape for arts education has had a certain unique niche that often has often consisted of the one-on-one ‘master & apprentice’ relationship between teacher and student. The necessity of passing down a craft has come from a few places, notably the economic need from working artists as well as he love and interest of the art from prospective students.
