As an educator, you strive to mould your students into bright, responsible individuals.

And as our country grows, so does your responsibility. By 2020, India will have the world’s largest young workforce. How many of them are employable? How many are getting into fields they actually enjoy and are good at? And how many are simply selecting a path that’s ‘secure’ or ‘financially beneficial’ in the long run?

For years, we’ve been prioritizing stability and security over interests when it comes to choosing a career. Up until a few years ago, the career you chose wasn’t likely to evolve at the frenzied pace it is currently going through. Today, the Technological Revolution is well underway and changing the way we approach jobs. A study by the World Economic Forum revealed that by 2022, nearly one-fifth of the world’s workforce will feel the impact of AI-related advancements in their workplace. Does it still make sense to prioritise ‘stability’ over interests, when just about every career could drastically transform thanks to technological advancements?

A Unique Approach To Pre And Post-Assessments

by Grant Wiggins, Ph.D, Authentic Education

One of my favorite stories concerns the legendary basketball coach John Wooden. He always gave himself a research project in the off season. As recounted in the insightful and practical book You Haven’t Taught If They Haven’t Learned, one year Wooden’s UCLA Bruins had done a poor job at shooting fouls. What did Wooden do? Call up the coaches of the best foul-shooting teams as well as the best-shooting players to find out what they did in practice. He learned a vital lesson: too often, foul-shooting was not done under game conditions in every day practice.

This great resource talked about the value of pre and post assessment. That is giving a form of assessment at the beginning of the teaching time period and then giving the same assessment at the end. This was something that I have thought about very little. I think it is a great tool that can be used to really check and see if your students have learned the key targets that you wanted them to learn. I think that it can be very insightful for the teacher because it will help to show just how much students have learned over the course of the year and things they maybe didn’t learn as well. It can also be helpful for the students to see what they have learned and realized that they have accomplished something. It just requires that teachers follow through with it.

Managing the interface between people and technology.

Two weeks ago I participated in the annual ANZSOG Master Class held at the Melbourne Business School and facilitated by Professors John Alford, Jon Brock and Mike Vitale.

The workshop brings together academics from the public policy space and this year the first day was spent focusing on the potential impact of online education and how current teaching practitioners are working within this area.

As a part if this I was asked to talk about my own observations and, as I listened to the conversations around me, and thought of the people that we teach within ANZSOG, it reinforced in my mind that the most fundamental education that is needed across the board is to teach digital literacy in order to facilitate digital competency.
