Seven Free Tools That Help Students Format Bibliographies | Free Technology for Teachers

Seven Free Tools That Help Students Format Bibliographies | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Back when I was in high school we had to learn how to create bibliographies by working from a template that my history teacher, Mr. Diggs, provided to us. When I went to college, I referred to that template and an early version of The Student Writer to make bibliographies. Today, students have a wealth of online tools that can help them properly structure citations and bibliographies. I've featured a handful of them over the last couple of years. Here they are.

Earlier this week I learned about a new bibliography creation tool called MyBib. MyBib is an open source project. Unlike some of the big names in the bibliography generator market, MyBib doesn't charge a fee for their advanced features like exporting your bibliography to Google Drive or using a citation style other than MLA or APA.

I got an email from the creator of MyBib this morning and spent some time trying it out. I am so impressed! Here's what I wrote him about the features I love:

  • "Add notes & quotes" to citations is brilliant! I can see students who have limited time doing some research, saving citations and adding notes to remind themselves why they want to use that source.
  • "Go to webpage" is also brilliant during the research phase! An easy way to check you're citing sources you actually used. (I'm sure everyone has had that one teacher/professor who goes through your citations and asks you to show where you used each one.)
  • The extensive types of sources. Our 6th graders do a project in which they need to cite songs and art work. Citation builders other than EasyBib rarely had the depth of sources we needed.
  • Being able to create an account without receiving a confirmation email. Our students cannot receive emails from outside our school district with their student emails.
  • Saving to Google Drive. A must for our Google Suites school!
  • Being able to manage multiple bibliographies simultaneously. Not a big issue in middle school, but I know in high school and beyond this will be helpful.

Check it out for yourself: I think you'll find it's a great tool to share with students!

Whether it is writing for academic purposes or for one's own note-taking/learning, how does one keep track of all the articles and publications one comes across? Evernote is a great tool for keeping notes , while both  iAnnotate  and GoodReader are  useful to work with files, but one still needs to make bibliographies. Here are some suggestions which offer students help.

10 Great Tools for Academic Research You Should Know about ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

10 Great Tools for Academic Research You Should Know about ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Compared with how academic research was carried out in the pre-internet era, It seems like technology is really a godsend gift to researchers. From easy and unlimited access to journal articles to web tools that do the referencing and auto-syncing, everything has been digitized making it way easier for todays researchers to add to the body of the human knowledge than any time in history.

As a web 2.0 researcher and a graduate student in the faculty of education in Mount Saint Vincent University, I have had the chance to experiment with a wide variety of web tools that can make your academic life much more easier. Below are some of the web tools I have been recommending to undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and PHD students, and professors. Check them out below and make sure you share them with your colleagues, they could be in dire need for them.
