Blaming decolonisation for limiting free speech is a red herring

Blaming decolonisation for limiting free speech is a red herring | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

recent HEPI blog written by Professor Doug Stokes argues that the decolonisation movement in higher education is ‘illiberal and authoritarian’, describing recent comments from the Minister of State for Universities that decolonisation is ‘censoring history’ as ‘a defence of key academic values’. While we certainly respect the author’s right to freely express their opinions, we believe the blog perpetuates several fundamental misunderstandings about curriculum decolonisation that should be addressed.

I wanted to compile a list of online resources around decolonisation, for my benefit as well as yours, so I went looking. And I found that other people already had this idea and did the work. Quite a number of other people, in fact. I found three good long lists that already existed online, and I have put them here in a list of their own.

Decolonising Study Skills and the role of Learning Development –

Decolonising Study Skills and the role of Learning Development – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
At Newcastle this year, we’ve been beyond fortunate to have an incredible Student Union exec, a team of formidable and inspiring Sabs who have not only worked their hardest to support their fellow students through what they couldn’t have known would be one of the hardest academic years ever due to the pandemic, but who have also somewhere found the reserves of energy to engage with another critical and timely issue, decolonising the curriculum. Their Decolonise NCL campaign has to date included a series of online events attracting a seriously impressive array of speakers, as well as pulling together resources and pushing the University to pledge a commitment to decolonisation and anti-racist work at all levels. It’s simply awe-inspiring.
