View of Using ‘Visitors and Residents’ to visualise digital practices | First Monday

‘Visitors and Residents’ is a continuum of modes of engagement which has been well established as a valuable way to understand how individuals engage online. This paper discusses how the original metaphor of Visitors and Residents has been developed into a mapping process which helps individuals to visualise, and reflect on, the digital tools and1 places they use or spend time in. The paper explores ways that the Visitors and Resident work has developed and proposes a method of analysing a body of maps through ‘engagement genres’ to discover broader trends in behaviour across groups.

Contents

1. Introduction
2. Mapping ways of engaging with the Web in different contexts
3. Piloting the mapping process: A form of qualitative research

It seems that the onset of a new decade is enough to get a lot of folk involved with ed tech questioning its position in the grand scheme of things. There seems to be a whiff of gloom and despondency in the air? I give you the amazing ‘The 100 Worst Ed-Tech Debacles of the Decade‘ piece from Audrey Watters of Hack Education, and Dean Shareski’s ‘I Don’t Think I’m an EdTech Guy Anymore‘ thoughtful reflection as starters for 10.

Integrating Technology in the Classroom

Integrating Technology in the Classroom | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

There are many technology-based tools that can be helpful for classroom teachers, and sorting through them to find ones that may be useful can be challenging. This web page describes pedagogical categories of technology tools for teachers; an infographic of useful technology tools (PDF, 275KB) grouped by the categories below is also available  so that teachers can more easily identify which technology tools may be of use to them. Teachers who may not use technology might want to start with just one tool, while those who are more familiar with some technology are encouraged to try a new tool that suits their classroom purposes.

Stop teaching. Start Learning with Educational Games

Janet is a student in a top university in Singapore. I had arranged to meet her to chat about her experience with classroom learning. We agreed on a cafe at Bugis called Mellower Coffee. One that is popular with students, she says.

Great! A new hangout.

I arrived and saw her at a corner. Plugged into earphones, she was engrossed in some videos. Youtube it seems. But this video was different. It looked like the video of a professor teaching in a class. But instead of being in a classroom, she is in a very nice cafe and having a nice coffee.

K-12 Schools Need to Stop Wasting Money on Tech They Don’t Need

K-12 Schools Need to Stop Wasting Money on Tech They Don’t Need | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Our current academic model is falling very short of where learners will need to be in order to graduate with digital literacy. The K-12 schools across the nation are determined to help make up for this deficit by purchasing every piece of technology that comes their way. It is reassuring to see that so many teachers and administrators are dedicated to giving students the tools they will need in the real world upon graduation. Unfortunately, there is an underside to these noble intentions that could be doing more harm than good."

I love techie gadgets, but I am also a proponent of using the right tool for the job. Sometimes the right tech is a 4" x 6" index card.

Reginald Smith's curator insight, April 16, 2018 9:26 PM
I fear that many districts can be caught in this bubble. Purchasing tech without a clear direction, or even purchasing tech because it's what the teachers want and not what the students need. We need to make sure students are taught necessary skills (digital literacy) which is far more important than the tech.

When we started the intention was to make it distinct from the NMC New Horizon reports by focusing on pedagogy. I think, to be honest, in those early ones there was probably a technology focus still, but as it’s progressed it has really moved away from this to more pedagogy, socially focused issues.

Keeping Up with… Digital Pedagogy

Keeping Up with… Digital Pedagogy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Digital pedagogy focuses specifically on the use of technology to break down learning barriers and enhance students’ learning experiences. By definition, its existence dates back to the earliest use of digital tools in classrooms -- however, larger awareness of the need for digital pedagogy has emerged only in the last decade or so, in recognition of the changing relationship between students and computers, handheld devices, social media, and more.

Using Digital Learning to Trick Students into Thinking?

Using Digital Learning to Trick Students into Thinking? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Many students look at online learning courses as a respite from the rigors of brick-and-mortar learning, but that’s only true if educators and administrators choose not to maximize the digital learning environment to challenge their student populace.  While digital learning has its limitations and flaws, it can also be used as a powerful tool to stimulate critical thinking in students. In fact, there are plenty of ways to induce such propensities for critical thought without a student even being aware of it!"

The university has developing digital capabilities as one of its core goals for the next five years. For instance, it has student digital champions who help others to develop the digital capabilities they might be expected to use in their course, such as e-portfolios, or WordPress as a website-creation tool.

Meanwhile, Harlow College claims that it has improved retention and achievement rates for students by making good use of digital technologies. For staff, it offers five cross-college development days where they can learn new digital skills. And there are 15-minute drop-in sessions where they can learn about new apps and tools and explore how they can use them in teaching.

Practicing Collaborative Digital Pedagogy to Foster Digital Literacies in Humanities Classrooms

Practicing Collaborative Digital Pedagogy to Foster Digital Literacies in Humanities Classrooms | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Key Takeaways
New digital tools and platforms create opportunities in pedagogy, but they also result in deployment of under-tested digital tools in classroom instruction, which raises questions and challenges for educators.
A collaborative project between a media studies professor and a digital humanities librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign sought to address these challenges by developing digital pedagogy practices.
As the two case studies described here show, these practices can foster an environment of interdisciplinary, collaborative student engagement with new tools; openly acknowledge the digital tools' experimental states; and encourage playful student tinkering with the tools, even when they appear simple or familiar.

This sentence -- this one right here -- is the first sentence I’ve written in two months that wasn’t co-authored in a Google Doc. It’s the first sentence, outside of e-mails and tweets and notes I’ve written to myself, that has my name (and only my name) on both its front and back ends -- the first sentence I can look at and say with certainty, “I wrote that entire thing without help and without anyone else watching it get written.”
