The Importance of your Digital Reputation

The Importance of your Digital Reputation | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
We live in a society where online searches tend to influence – if not drive – many of our decisions. If we are looking for a good doctor in the area, a potential vacation spot, or advice on what electronics to purchase this holiday season, we will perform searches using our phone, tablet, or computer. It is so easy and has become almost second-nature. That said, we don’t just look up inanimate objects and places – we look up individuals all the time.

Elephant in the Room: Your lack of Digital Reputation precedes you.

Elephant in the Room: Your lack of Digital Reputation precedes you. | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

When Brian Solis published his latest post “Hello, It’s nice to meet you … again: your Digital Reputation precedes you” I immediately thought of a recent experience where digital reputations did proceed people, although not in a way which gave me faith in listening to their advice. To me this underlines the very point that Brian is making, and while we know that digital reputation does matter perhaps it's time for us in the industry itself to take it more seriously and to show it a bit more respect. We see advisors with no digital reputation advising executives on their social media presence and strategy. And not only advising executives but being promoted as speakers at social media conferences as experts on social media! It's time to expose the elephant in the room and to take a stand. Otherwise we risk making a mockery of our own expertise and experience.

Social Media Prank shows Danger of Public Status Posting | UKEdChat.com

Social Media Prank shows Danger of Public Status Posting | UKEdChat.com | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In a society where people publicise their status on a plethora of social media sites, US comedian Jack Vale startled individuals who had posted publically on Instagram and Twitter, sharing what he knew about them from their updates. The results of the ‘prank’ are clear to see, in that people are uncomfortable with others knowing about their life, and the reactions when faced with this in reality are interesting, and certainly worthy of exploration with students, who may not be aware that their information is accessible so easily on social networks.

Don't Be "That Guy" In Your Online Classes: Online Student Etiquette

Don't Be "That Guy" In Your Online Classes: Online Student Etiquette | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

An online classroom environment is very different from what you find in a traditional classroom. You communicate almost entirely in writing—and misunderstandings can happen more frequently than they do in person, because you don’t have the crutch of body language to help interpret someone’s remarks. You may feel relatively anonymous, sitting alone behind your computer screen, but you aren’t—and you shouldn’t behave that way.

Raising awareness about the importance of digital reputation management might save us of making mistakes that could put our lives (or any field) at risk. An image, a post or a comment could end up being a disaster for our professional fields if they are not along with social conventions about social behaviours. In additon, as social networks allow people to get a fast and massive access to information, we need to pay closer attention to the kind of content we publish since these spaces, nowadays, can even play the role of a resume for a job interview (as Scoop.it slogan says, "You are the content you publish"). My suggestion, then, could be to have our several social domains in separate virtual spaces instead of migled into only one, or limiting our virtual spaces to determined or previously set objectives.

Want to get fired from your first teaching job? Don’t read this article. Seriously. Just click on to something else. There’s nothing to see here. Move along....

First, let’s debunk the free speech myth: Many teachers believe they have the absolute First Amendment right to post anything they want on social networking sites, including party pix and diatribes about the boss. After all, they’re on their own time and using their own resources.

Sadly, the courts say otherwise.

Although students are generally well informed about protecting content about them that is posted online, there is a need for more education when it comes to corporate uses of their personal information. What students know – compared to what they think they know – about protecting their data, is fraught with contradictions.
