Guest Post - Protecting Patron Privacy in Digital Resources

Guest Post - Protecting Patron Privacy in Digital Resources | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Editor’s Note: We first quoted Caltech Artist-in-Residence David Kremers maxim, “Privacy is the new luxury” back in 2009. In the decade since then, we’ve seen a continuous assault on personal privacy, as surveillance has become the dominant business model on the internet. We’ve approached questions of privacy from many different angles over the years here at The Scholarly Kitchen, including technology architectural approaches to privacy (particularly relevant in light of new authentication systems like RA21), as well as striving to find the right balance between personalization and privacy).

Librarians have long been stalwart guardians of patron privacy — an increasingly difficult task in the era of Google and Facebook. Today’s post is by Mimi Calter, Deputy University Librarian for Stanford University, who brings a useful framework for libraries as they consider patron privacy.

Patron privacy has been a long-standing concern of libraries, and in the era of Facebook data-sharing scandals and of GDPR, the privacy of users of digital content is an increasing concern. In response to that general issue, and to several specific difficulties with data providers, Stanford Libraries, with support from a number of our peer institutions, have put forward a Statement on Patron Privacy and Database Access.

Librarians and media specialists are bridging the gap between instruction and technology. One pioneer shares how she does it
For library media specialists, finding high-quality digital resources that align with Common Core and state standards, and that support classroom instruction, is an ongoing challenge. No longer just the keepers of the physical books and card catalogues, these media specialists are being called upon to organize and share content that can then be used to create relevant and personalized learning experiences.

Make it easier for others to find and use your digital collection, enhancing its impact and reach.

Universities and other organisations have made considerable investment in creating collections of digitised resources for learning and research. However, these resources are not always as discoverable as they could be by online audiences.

Digital reading and its impact on memory and learning

Digital reading and its impact on memory and learning

Is it easier to remember information we read on a printed page rather than from a screen? We look at the digital reading and whether it helps or hinders our ability to learn.

It’s often been said that memory is like a muscle - exercise it and it gets bigger and stronger - the more we remember the more we are able to remember.

Spotlight on the digital: how discoverable are your digitised collections? | JISC Digitisation and Content Programme

Spotlight on the digital: how discoverable are your digitised collections? | JISC Digitisation and Content Programme | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Over the past few months we’ve been busy setting up Spotlight on the Digital, an eight-month project (Jun 2013-Jan 2014) which Jisc is running in collaboration with RLUK (Research Libraries UK) and SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) as part of the Jisc co-design programme. This is a pilot programme including six projects that was set up to test new approaches to innovation with some of the Jisc key stakeholder organisations.

WHY?
The need for Spotlight emerged out of the concern that digitised collections are not as “discoverable” as they could be through the channels and devices most commonly accessed by users.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities with Open Educational Resources

Turning Challenges into Opportunities with Open Educational Resources | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
What are the best dynamic, digital resources that can fit teachers’ unique instructional styles, align with district and state standards, and be personalized to meet students’ diverse learning needs? At Liberty Public Schools (LPS), we started asking this question over five years ago, and discovered an answer: open educational resources (OER). OER are openly licensed materials that are free for educators and students to use, customize, and share.

A Great Scholarly Resource for Student Researchers and Educators

A Great Scholarly Resource for Student Researchers and Educators | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

One of the biggest concerns of student researchers and academics is access to scientific knowledge stored in the form of journal articles. Many of these articles are not free and unless you are affiliated with a higher education institution, it will cost you a fortune to buy or rent these resources.

Amplifying Student Voice Through Digital Resources, Part 2

Amplifying Student Voice Through Digital Resources, Part 2 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I am regularly in awe at the goodwill our students extend faculty, myself included, as they attempt to make sense of and successfully complete our idiosyncratic assignments. Too often, students hear faculty respond to any confusion students might have by telling them to “read the syllabus” or “read the assignment,” as if none of the faculty have ever tried to put together an Ikea dresser or played a board game for the first time after simply reading the instructions. Learning to do anything means learning to do the thing through some combination of instructions, participation, and materials.

There is a major disconnect between student and faculty digital literacy perceptions, and faculty must provide better access to, and knowledge about, digital resources to improve learning outcomes. At least, that's what new findings suggest.

10 Digital Citizenship Resources: The Web in the Classroom, Part 3 | Tech Learning

10 Digital Citizenship Resources: The Web in the Classroom, Part 3 | Tech Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

With the opening of  classroom walls allowing for virtual journeys on the worldwide web comes the need to provide classroom educators and students with resources regarding proper learning and citizenship on the internet. I believe this is essential to the success of any e-learning, blended learning, and on-line learning program. It is important that educators teach and model proper digital citizenship. It is equally important that the school curriculum has digital  citizenship standards embedded in the curriculum. Many of the free resources listed below provide some wonderful possibilities for educators committed to the amazing learning opportunities the internet provides.

Kedryn bray's curator insight, January 6, 2016 9:47 PM

She makes very good points about being able to use the internet as a learning tool in the classroom, it would be a very good resource for children to be hands on and being able to visualize some lessons. Plus, she posts very reliable and useful links to more information in using tech in the classroom.
