Institutional commitment, organizational change, and the goal to make non-incremental advances in student learning.

Higher ed people are deeply fatigued from hearing too much innovation talk. The concept of innovation has lost most of its meaning through overuse.

When innovation is discussed, it is often as a hammer to pound “incumbent” institutions for not understanding that they must “disrupt themselves” or die.

Can innovation be reclaimed? Is it possible to think of innovation through the lens of advancing learning?

My definition of learning innovation is institutional and organizational in scale.

A college or university serious about innovation will prioritize investments in making non-incremental advances in student learning.

The relationship between cost, access and quality is tight and significant within the mission and the goals of institutions and governments worldwide, and is frequently referred to as the ‘iron triangle.’ Increasing access, constraining cost and maintaining quality standards define an impossible wish list, given the level of incompatibility among these drivers. The solution in many cases has been introducing exclusivity to post-secondary education through narrowing paths for learners.

Recent advances in technology have the potential of becoming a powerful response to this conundrum.
