5 things I'm telling my kids to prepare them for the future

5 things I'm telling my kids to prepare them for the future | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

I have four kids, ages 5 to 14, and I and know they’re very unlikely to follow the same educational path I did. I’m certain they’ll be preparing themselves for a very different job market. As my youngest is in kindergarten and my oldest just started high school, here are my thoughts for them.

Technology’s impacts are varied and yet to be determined. We like technology when it makes our daily lives easier and often more fun. But on the flip side, we worry. It’s natural to look toward the future and wonder what change will bring. Earlier this year, for example, Gallup found that nearly eight in 10 Americans believe artificial intelligence (AI) will destroy more jobs than it creates over the next decade. I believe the impact of AI will be much less significant than most predictions, but at the same time want to help people look ahead, eyes wide open.

Creating independent learners

Creating independent learners | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
By 2020, around 65 per cent of university graduates will work in jobs that don’t yet exist. Automation, driven by rapid advances in artificial intelligence, is also destroying repetitive, low-skill jobs, and changing the nature of most others.

Yet, as with all “creative destruction”, for every 20 jobs that will be lost from 2018-27, about 13 will be created, according to a 2016 research paper by Wilcocks and Laity. In India, the promised rich economic dividend that the country is demographically poised to reap depends deeply upon the quality of the future workforce. Therefore, the task of future-proofing the skills of our workforce assumes that much more import.

Want to Build an Educational App? Read This First

Want to Build an Educational App? Read This First | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Teacher-made materials have always been a part of classrooms. That’s because teachers can see better than anyone else what students need to understand a concept, especially if it’s an abstract one. As a result, teachers have made games and developed hands-on activities that support classroom instruction. The use of supplemental aids made from aluminum foil, manila folders, and other inexpensive household items is becoming a thing of the past, thanks to the availability of educational apps. What’s stopping a teacher from building an educational app? Not much. You can build an educational app if you do these things."

Steven Orjuela Garcia's curator insight, February 19, 2020 10:02 AM
I find this article quite interesting, as it serves as a reminder that as teachers we need to keep innovating the way we educate.   We can't keep using the same archaic methods from the last century, by using technology we can achive bigger advances in not only investigation but also education.
Daniela Ibarra Osorio's curator insight, March 15, 2020 4:37 PM
Education has had a fairly notable evolution with the use of technology, recognizing that there are differences that characterize each individual and that by recognizing these differences we understand inclusion and along with it goes the technology that supports us to change in order to generate significant changes and challenges in learning, content, proximity and teaching. The future of education lies in teaching about creativity, innovation, problem solving and understanding that we are and are going for an era of evolution.
thelma.davila@yahoo.com's curator insight, September 19, 2021 12:34 AM

The article focuses on transforming the current educational system that was implemented in the 1900's using new technology integration. Technology has the ability to use differentiation in each individual student.

Whose Responsibility Is It to Facilitate Digital Equity?

"Technology is becoming a significant component of classroom curriculum and education in general. Computers, tablets, and mobile apps all promote learning on a deeper level for students. While this edtech certainly can help to promote better grades and deeper understanding, schools are now facing issues with digital equity. Students from high-income families have far more access to the technology needed to succeed than those from low-income families. The major disparity is both shocking and widespread."

How to talk with your students about social media

How to talk with your students about social media | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Who hasn’t sent a text or email to the wrong person? Who hasn’t posted something online they later regretted or seen something in their feed that made them uncomfortable? These are difficult moments for people, no matter their age, and it’s natural to be unsure what to do. But the most common advice young people get about social media is usually limited to “Think before you send” and “Once you post something, it’s always there.” These clichés may be true, but they don’t help young people address the situation they’re in."
