Learning invisibly: The value of unstructured experiences –

Learning invisibly: The value of unstructured experiences – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When Cristóbal Cobo and I set out to write the book Aprendizaje Invisible (“Invisible learning”) nearly six years ago, we sought to take a 360° and 3D view of the educational landscape—with an eye toward the future. We found that, yes, technologies provide us with new opportunities, but the gap between formal learning and informal and non-formal modes of learning is becoming increasingly apparent.

Tools for conviviality? Illich and social media | Learning with 'e's

He was known as an anarchist philosopher and an intellectual maverick. A former Roman Catholic priest, he was arguably one of the most outspoken and prescient of all the 20th century's critical theorists, and his work is increasingly influential and relevant in an age where technology has pervaded every aspect of our lives. Ivan Illich hoped for a time when the transmission model of education, or 'funnels', would be replaced by 'educational webs' - his notion of what we now recognise as social networks.

Interaction Equivalency in an OER, MOOCS and Informal Learning Era | Miyazoe | Journal of Interactive Media in Education

This theoretical paper attempts to clarify design issues that the field of education has encountered in the context of OER (Open Educational Resources), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and increased emphasis on informal learning, as examined through the lens of the Interaction Equivalency Theorem. An overview of the core concepts of the Interaction Equivalency Theorem (the EQuiv) is provided and an explanation of how the EQuiv framework can be used to analyze interaction designs for online and distance education. The paper applies EQuiv ideas to categorize three variants of MOOCs (xMOOCs, sMOOCs and cMOOCs), from the perspective of interaction design so as to elucidate the major design differences. In conclusion, this paper explores the changing role of formal education in an era of learning opportunity where online educational resources and opportunities are readily accessible and in many cases completely free of cost to the learner.

What Are Cultures of Learning? ~ Stephen's Web

What Are Cultures of Learning?

September 12, 2013
Keynote presentation delivered to ALT-C, Nottingham, UK.

In the previous three days delegates will have explored all aspects of cultures of learning, ranging from digital literacies to learning landscapes, classroom environments, VLEs and open courses. But beyond examining the leaves and the trees, what can we say of the forest? A culture of learning – and for that matter, a learning culture – is composed of more than classes and schools and subjects, it is composed of the attitudes and enquiries of a culture of experimentation, curiosity, and quirkiness. In this closing keynote presentation, Stephen Downes will outline the framework of a culture of learning, identifying from examples and experiences the fundamental values that must be modeled and demonstrated by society’s leaders, and will comment on implications to practice, research and policy.

Informal Learning – A Necessary Tool to Enhance Training

Informal Learning – A Necessary Tool to Enhance Training | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
One of your colleagues is having a problem filling out an online form; what is he most likely to do, go to an eLearning course that explains the process or ask the colleague sitting next to him? If your answer is the latter, it is no surprise. Informal learning happens frequently in the workplace.

Formal Learning vs Informal Learning Infographic If formal learning only accounts for 10% of what we learn, why do we even need it? Why Matching Informal and Formal Learning Is in Style

Why Matching Informal and Formal Learning Is in Style | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Informal learning is in style—but does that mean that formal learning is so last season? Absolutely not! Recently, e-Learning professionals have been seeing how sharp informal and formal learning look together. The rise of informal learning is not a replacement for formal training; rather, the two have an interdependent relationship.
Sanna Leinonen's curator insight, May 19, 2014 1:39 AM

Ainakin englannin kielessä tuo informaalinen oppiminen on niin suuressa osassa, ettei sen vaikutusta voi kieltää. Siksi onkin hyvä, jos sitä voi järkevästi yhdistää formaaliin oppimiseen.

Commonwealth of Learning - Report on the Assessment and Accreditation of Learners using OER

Commonwealth of Learning - Report on the Assessment and Accreditation of Learners using OER | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This report shares the findings and lessons learned from an investigation into the economics of disaggregated models for assessing and accrediting informal learners, with particular attention to the OER University (OERu) consortium. It also relies on data from a small-scale survey conducted by two of the authors on perceptions, practices and policies relating to openness in assessment and accreditation in post-secondary institutions (Murphy & Witthaus, 2012). These investigations include the perceptions of stakeholders in post-secondary education towards the OERu concept, combined with a look at economic models for universities to consider in implementing OER assessment and accreditation policies.
