7 Poor Thinking Habits We Must Fix to Think More Critically

7 Poor Thinking Habits We Must Fix to Think More Critically | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

At one time or another we have all engaged in poor thinking habits. After all, nobody’s perfect and neither is anybody’s thinking. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t get better at it and start thinking more critically. It’s worth our time to seek ways of improving our thinking and to guide our learners to do the same.

Poor thinking habits refer to the ways of thinking that produce adverse effects in every part of our lives. They can negatively affect our personal progress, our relationships, and everyone around us. But they do much more than that, actually. Not only do they affect the outside world, but they do damage from within as well. In the long run poor thinking can affect our self-esteem, our ability to cope with challenges, and even our physical health.

Paul Hamad's curator insight, January 22, 2019 8:40 PM
Can you guess how many days it takes to change a habit? I know the answer, and it's not what you think either.

Recent studies that focus on misinformation online pointed out that the selective exposure to specific contents lead to ‘echo-chambers’ in which users tend to shape and reinforce their beliefs.

Pedagogy in motion: the constant growth cycle of a reflective teacher | Starr Sackstein, MJE, NBCT | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

“What does achievement look like?” The question lingers as does the pedagogical implications of how to create it in my classroom and because of the weight of this question constantly pressuring my consciousness, the need to excel as an educator continuous bubbles forcing me to reflect further on my part in that process.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish* | Library Babel Fish | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

It’s been a good ride. For 10 years, I’ve been an Inside Higher Ed blogger. I’ll be sad to leave the blogging team, but after 10 years readers have probably had enough of me. (Ever since the days of sharing my opinions on library Listservs in the 1990s, I have always imagined eyes rolling as my name pops up: not that woman again!) Opinions, I have them.

I’ll carry on blogging at my own site, though without deadlines I suspect I will be a bit more ad hoc about when I post. A more relaxed schedule will give me time to work on that book project that I’ve pushed aside for too long. (It’s -- surprise! -- a college librarian’s take on technology and how it works on society.)

The Boundaries of 'Information' in Information Literacy | Library Babel Fish

The Boundaries of 'Information' in Information Literacy | Library Babel Fish | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Academic libraries spend a lot of time and energy thinking about student learning. A 2016 Ithaka survey of library deans and directors indicate that they perceive the most important role for the library is “helping undergraduate students develop research, critical analysis, and information literacy skills,” with “supporting and facilitating faculty teaching activities” coming in as a close second. A recent round up of projects in the Assessment in Action projects that are intended to demonstrate the value of libraries do so almost exclusively in terms of student learning (or, to use the new buzz phrase, “student success” which isn’t exactly the same, but seems to please administrators more). Countless hours are being spent on interpreting and implementing the new Framework for Information Literacy which has some ambitious ideas about what students should learn

People love visuals. Visuals have been shown to help us learn more quickly and to retain more information than text alone. We’re more easily able to understand the world around us when we have visual components to aid us. The same goes for the classroom. If you present your students with a block of text …

New Technologies will Both Expand and Limit Who has Access to Information | IFLA Trend Report | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The IFLA Trend Report acknowledges access to information as having a profound influence on future developments in the information economy.

An ever-expanding digital universe will bring a higher value to information literacy skills like basic reading and competence with digital tools. People who lack these skills will face barriers to inclusion in a growing range of areas. The nature of new online business models will heavily influence who can successfully own, profit from, share or access information in the future.
