How the Open University library uses Facebook Live to reach, engage and support students - Open Research Online

The Open University’s Library Services (http://www.open.ac.uk/library/) has a specialist team of 7 librarians, the Live Engagement team, who design and deliver real-time online teaching using Adobe Connect. There is a programme of generic library and module-specific sessions. Whilst we reach a lot of students through these sessions, we like to try out new ways of engaging with students and hope to reach those who don’t attend formal library training.

Why information literacy?

Why information literacy? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Information literacy (IL) refers to the set of skills required to locate, evaluate and use information effectively.
Information literacy skills are useful study skills that become essential as students progress to post-graduate level work. They also have wider benefits, encouraging students to become independent, lifelong learners, and enabling people to actively participate as citizens of the 'information society'. These skills are also recognised by employers as essential in the modern workplace.

Planting the seeds of a digital literacy education program

Planting the seeds of a digital literacy education program | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The main objective of the library sessions is to increase students’ awareness of the library as an important part of university life, and to help them develop some digital literacy skills along the way.

The sessions will be based on gaming principles, with the students organised into teams to complete challenges involving the use of digital technologies to earn points or rewards. Each team will have an ipad mini, and use a range of apps to complete the challenges, which will have them moving around the library, learning about the library as a virtual and physical space, and completing activities which teach them information literacy skills related to searching, evaluating, managing and sharing information.
