Innovation in Educational Technology ~ Stephen Downes

Innovation in Educational Technology ~ Stephen Downes | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
What are the factors that motivate innovation in educational technology, and what is the outcome that results from those factors. In this talk Stephen Downes addresses the set of commonly understood ‘drivers’, ranging from factors ranging from demographic change to economic restraint to technology development. In addition, he also examines the ‘attractors’ for innovation, defining these as the factors that define what we want to accomplish through education, factors that range from personal self-improvement to workplace training to social and cultural development. From the perspective of these factors we can comprehend not only the recent history of educational technology, but also gain perspectives on the future as well. We can also comment on what we want, need and value in an education system, and thus frame the decisions that we will need to take in the short term in order to prepare for the long term. Keynote, Jan 24, 2018.

I was tweeted into a conversation about assessment and I wanted to take a minute to comment. Elliott Shore (ARL) recently called for a radical change in library assessment—with the gist being a move from descriptive to predictive. I’d like to push it further into the realm of innovation-generation.

Going into 2020, the push for institutions to support all students on their path to success underpins many of the top IT priorities for higher education leaders, according to new survey findings released this week by Educause.

“The focus of the student experience is very, very important and it’s reflective of a larger trend in higher education,” Susan Grajek, Educause vice president for communities and research, told EdScoop. “We are starting to recognize it’s not just students’ job to be successful, it’s the institutions job to help make them successful.”

This week, we launched our Creating Innovators Grant Project and I am really excited about the possibilities.  The project involves peer  coaching, where some of our most creative and innovative teachers have agreed to mentor 2 teachers in their schools who otherwise would probably not have volunteered for this kind of in-depth professional development. The mentor teachers applied to participate, and were selected not only based on their own creative teaching talents, but from an expressed desire to learn and grow themselves through the experience.

Empowering Teachers with DIY

Empowering Teachers with DIY | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Betty Ray is Edutopia's senior blog editor and community manager.

Do it Yourself -- or DIY -- culture has been around since the 90s. (Remember 'zines, and indie record labels?) Now that technology is a gazillion times cheaper, more pervasive and powerful, the DIY movement is spreading into almost every aspect of society.

This has powerful implications for teachers; many of whom are participating in some innovative (and low-cost, or free) professional development opportunities. To that end, I would argue that we are amid a learning renaissance, and that the DIY movement is one of its most powerful catalysts.
