Research on the forgetting curve has revealed some shocking statistics. Within one hour, people will have forgotten an average of 50 % of new information. Within 24 hours, they have forgotten an average of 70 % of the new information, and within a week, they will have forgotten 90 % of it. Of course, it’s not the same for everybody, but it’s still pretty disconcerting.

And this fact is the problem with corporate training – most of it goes to waste. Most of what your employees have learned will be forgotten unless you employ what is known as “spaced repetition.”

One thing that research in cognitive psychology has gifted to us over the last decade or so, is clear evidence that learners are delusional when it comes to judgements about their own learning. The big name in the field is Bjork, along with many other high quality researchers, who says that learning is “quite misunderstood (by learners)…. we have a flawed model of how we learn and remember”. There’s often a negative correlation between people’s judgements of their learning, what they think they have learnt and how they think they learn best - and what they’ve actually learnt and the way they can actually optimise their learning. In short; our own perceptions of learning are seriously delusional. This is why engagement, fun, learner surveys and happy sheets are such bad measures of what is actually learnt and the enemy of optimal learning strategies.

Most curricula found in education systems or training programs are designed in a linear fashion. They are unnatural. Teachers and trainers, like other humans, want to order ‘stuff’ in such a way that it apparently makes sense: this leads to this leads to that thinking. Most curricula, despite sometimes referring to higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the objectives, is at the competence level of describing, explaining, and demonstrating. This leads to rather stilted forms of didactic teaching, the ubiquitous slide show, the passive learner. All of which is unnatural and we wonder why learners have problems in motivation and learning.

"Part of the problem with all this talk about 'learning experience' is it's questionable whether learning is actually experienced at all."

 

This brilliant quote, by Leonard Houx, skewers the recent hubris around ‘learning experiences’. Everything is an ‘experience’ and what is needed is some awareness of good and bad learning experiences. Unfortunately, all too often what we see are single event, over-engineered, media heavy, video, animation and single courses that research shows, result, not in significant learning, but… 

 

1) Clickthrough (click on this cartoon head, click on this to see X; click on option on MCQ) that allows the learner to skate across the surface of the content, 

2) Cognitive overload (overuse of media)

3) Diversionary activity (infantile gamification).

Learning and Skills for the Digital Era

 

This forms an important part of the Europe 2020 agenda and its various flagships and policy initiatives.

 

JRC research in this area started in 2005 and is focused on how to make better use of ICT for rethinking learning, for innovating education and training and for addressing new skills requirements (e.g. digital competence) to generate growth, employment and social inclusion. More than 20 major studies have been undertaken and more than 100 different publications released.

 

JRC research in 2016-2017 is structured around three main strands:

  • 21st century Skills and Competences
  • Innovating and modernising Education and Training
  • Open Education

JRC's Learning and Skills projects cover a wide range of studies: On citizens and learners (micro), on teachers and educators (professionals), and on educational organisations (meso) and societies (macro). As indicated in the image below, projects are developed in collaboration with sister Commission services (Education and Culture, Employment, Justice).

How Intellectual Humility Can Boost Our Curiosity & Ability to Learn: Read the Findings of a New Study

When I think about the times I definitely knew what I was talking about, versus the times I kinda, sorta, might have, maybe did… well…. Let’s just say that wisdom doesn’t always come with age, but hindsight certainly does. We may cringe when we remember the moments we were overconfident, out of our depth, etcetera, and so forth—when we lacked the critical capacity known as intellectual humility. It’s a quality that can save us a lot of shame, for sure, if we’re the type of people capable of feeling that emotion.

On April 4th, Last week Lou Pugliese joined the Future Trends Forum to describe a forthcoming research project he’d just completed. I’d heard about the research secondhand and was intrigued. One text described it as looking into institutional return on investment (ROI) for digital learning.
