Using the webcam to engage with online students

Using the webcam to engage with online students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Studying online can be a very solitary process and it’s this feeling of isolation that is most often attributed to the high rate of student drop-outs in online courses. As an online teacher, this makes quickly building a good relationship with your students all the more vital.

The traditional lecture format has been challenged in recent years by the widespread use of learning technologies and the new teaching models that have taken shape. Despite the emergence of these new models many UK universities rely on a well-established combination of lectures and tutorials throughout undergraduate study.

And one of the easiest and cheapest ways to increase its learning effectiveness is to record those lectures and lessons, and make those recordings available to students.

More and more studies indicate improved student attainment if they can access such recordings. In a wonderful little study led by Pierre Gorrisen, which we quoted above, they cleverly combined usage data with some survey and interview data to come to some clear conclusions which we’ll explore here, along with the findings of other studies.

These lectures are beyond the audio video recordings and includes screen capture, additional course content and other value-add features. The solution is packaged with a wide array of software, system capabilities, and hardware options. Many schools in India are implementing these systems to provide students with greater convenience if they miss the class or simply want to catch up on course content. As an additional benefit, captured lectures often form part of online or blended course development.

In my work as an educational technologist in Higher Education (and with academic/teaching experience in HE) I am more frequently receiving queries and requests from teaching staff who want to make a video of their lecture so it can be available to their students on their module site in the institutional VLE.

Great point about video not being always necessary!  Just watching someone talk is BORING!  Plus if it is just audio - downloading it becomes portable and now you are not tied to a screen.  I can listen in my car, on my walk, washing dishes...  Yes, maybe I need to listen and take notes, but sometimes a general overview of the content is nice too.

Flexible and effective use of lecture capture and exploring the use of video in Higher Education

How are universities and schools putting in place successful lecture capture schemes that move beyond simple recording to meet current educational challenges? Does flipping the classroom, lecture theatre or training environment have a benefit it terms of increasing the impact of learning or of making more efficient use of limited educational resources?

With discussions taking place around the College and University about the merits and technicalities of providing students with recorded materials, the timing couldn’t have been better for this workshop.

We also need to be careful we do not ignore the ‘other’ questions that need asking: it’s not only about the students and pedagogic use of the technology, it’s also about how it’s implemented. We need to be sure to address the resources and resourcing, the implementation, the strategy surrounding its installation and use, the pedagogy, the support, etc. It is not about how we use it, it’s about how well we use it. - See more at: http://www.dontwasteyourtime.co.uk/conferences/lecture-capture-pedagogy-policy-and-support-lborolc13/#sthash.tNoDcW7C.rStl7xDo.dpufWe also need to be careful we do not ignore the ‘other’ questions that need asking: it’s not only about the students and pedagogic use of the technology, it’s also about how it’s implemented.
