Integrating Intersectionality into Library Instruction & Programming - LibGuides at University of California

Integrating Intersectionality into Library Instruction & Programming - LibGuides at University of California  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Incorporating critical librarianship into daily practice may initially seem daunting due to varying demands and constraints. Given these challenges, how can we help first-year students develop more complex understandings of social issues that they may be researching and writing about in their composition courses? How do we reach first-year students who may have overlapping identities find resources and support during their time at the university? Join two academic librarians who will introduce the efforts they have made to incorporate intersectional themes into instruction and educational programming on their respective campuses. Librarians attending this roundtable discussion will brainstorm and share ideas for engaging in first-year instruction and outreach efforts that promote intersectionality.

Embedded librarianship: the future of libraries | OUPblog

Embedded librarianship: the future of libraries | OUPblog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

With the rise of the internet and electronic research resources, it is not uncommon for a librarian to hear that libraries are no longer necessary. “You can find anything on the internet” is an often heard phrase. What most of those people do not realize is how integrated librarians (and information scientists) are in organizing and providing information to the public. Libraries must be able to offer resources across multiple formats, not solely through the internet and single books, but through models and creative and organizational programs as well.

Eight Librarians Flip Their Skills To Serve a New Calling

Eight Librarians Flip Their Skills To Serve a New Calling | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

“Being a librarian isn’t a job that ends with a shift,” says Megan M. Cusick, grassroots specialist in the Office for Library Advocacy (OLA) at the America Library Association (ALA). “We’re always building connections in the community and expanding our resource base.”

Those qualities inform school and children’s librarians’ decisions when they change career tracks, as Cusick did, either midstream or after decades on the job. Their skills—tech expertise and engagement with books and learning, often enhanced by a passion for advocacy—position them well for a career shift.

I’ve learned many things over my over 40 years as a librarian. That said, we don’t, as professionals, sufficiently embed learning at the core of our practice.

In Bed with the Library: A Critical Exploration of Embedded Librarianship at the City University of New York Nora Almeida, Julia Pollack | Almeida

Abstract
This project considers the efficacy and scalability of embedded librarianship initiatives within the City University of New York (CUNY) library system and presents findings of an original research study conducted in 2015. Through an analysis of recent LIS literature on embedment, response data from a survey of librarians, and a selection of library position descriptions, this article examines the implications of embedment practices for librarians and libraries. By shedding light on the extent and context of embedment, the platforms used in virtual embedment scenarios, and obstacles that librarians presently face, this study aims to pinpoint strategies for embedded librarianship initiatives and begin a productive dialogue about the future of library integration in classrooms and educational technology platforms.

The research librarian of the future: data scientist and co-investigator

The research librarian of the future: data scientist and co-investigator | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There remains something of a disconnect between how research librarians themselves see their role and its responsibilities and how these are viewed by their faculty colleagues. Jeannette Ekstrøm, Mikael Elbaek, Chris Erdmann and Ivo Grigorov imagine how the research librarian of the future might work, utilising new data science and digital skills to drive more collaborative and open scholarship. Arguably this future is already upon us but institutions must implement a structured approach to developing librarians’ skills and services to fully realise the benefits.

Imagine research librarians as equal partners in the research process, helping a researcher in any discipline to map existing knowledge gaps, identify emerging disciplinary crossovers before they even happen, and assist in the formulation and refinement of frontier research questions.
